Ivar Stenberg (RW, L, 5’11”, 183, Frolunda, 09/30/2007) Ivar Stenberg is a 5’11’, 183-pound left-shot winger playing for Frölunda in the SHL, one of the strongest professional leagues outside the NHL, and he is one of the more dynamic prospects in his draft class. His 32 points in 41 SHL games as a draft-eligible player is extremely impressive and rare. His performance on the international stage further reinforces his offensive ceiling, as he recorded 10 points in 7 games at the U20 World Junior Championships and finished second among draft-eligible players behind Gavin McKenna. Stenberg averages 15:25 of ice time with nearly two minutes per game on the power play and his coaching staff relies on him to drive offense. Offensively he is a highly involved: he generates 3.4 shot attempts per game with nearly two shots on goal and creates 1.76 Grade-A scoring chances per game while converting at a strong 16% rate. He has an 89% pass completion rate and 1.26 pre-shot passes per game shows that he is both a play driver and a facilitator within offensive sequences and broken plays. His puck battle success rate of 50% and he competes effectively against men in the SHL. Stenberg combines elite skating, creativity, and puck skill with a high offensive IQ that consistently creates scoring opportunities. He displays excellent edge work, balance and small-area maneuverability, can beat defenders wide with speed, can cut to the middle to expose poor gaps, and shows exceptional vision when identifying passing lanes or creating space through deception. His ability to transition quickly from defense to offense and his willingness to pursue pucks aggressively on the forecheck further show the pace and competitiveness needed to succeed at the National League. However, there are still areas that NHL teams will monitor as he continues to develop. At 5’11’ he is slightly below the NHL average size for forwards, meaning he must continue to rely on speed, intelligence, and body positioning to compensate against larger defenders. While his puck battle numbers are solid, they are not dominant, and he does absorb more hits than needed (0.72 hits against per game). Additionally, while he plays responsibly defensively, he does not yet have penalty-killing usage that would demonstrate a complete two-way profile. In my opinion, Stenberg is a legitimate high-end NHL prospect whose offensive skill, skating, and hockey IQ project very well to the modern NHL. If he continues to add strength while improving his puck protection, he has the potential to develop into a top-six NHL winger capable of driving offense and contributing significantly on the power play. If his physical development does not progress and his game remains primarily skill-based, his talent level still projects him as a productive top-sic offensive winger, though potentially in a sheltered scoring role rather than as a fully complete two-way player.
