Game Sheet

General Game Notes: Windsor travelled to Oshawa for an east-west matchup that was much closer than the score would suggest. Although Windsor came away with the 4-1 victory, it was a one-goal game until late in the third period with many chances both ways. Oshawa actually outshot Windsor 36-27 but strong goaltending held them to just one goal. Below is a report of the best players in the game:

Jaden Cholette (G, R, 6’3″, 176, Oshawa Generals, 01/30/2006)

Comments: Jaden made some very big saves for his team in the loss. Although he gave up three goals, he made many notable saves on odd-man rushes, breakaways, and on the penalty-kill, including an almost two-minute 3v5. On the first goal against he was not square on the rush and then was a bit slow to get across the net on the pass. The goal was scored on a 2v1 backdoor pass but he did not put himself in the best position to make the save or get there quickly enough to give himself a chance. The third goal was definitely one he would want back as he was again off-angle and gave the opponent a lot of net to shoot at. Both of these off-angle plays came on rushes down the left side of the ice (to his right). He set pucks for his defensemen on dump ins and made a few short passes but his puck-handling and passing ability can improve to make him more helpful on the breakout. He had a lot of big saves for his team to keep it a one-goal game for most of the game.

Luke Posthumus (C, R, 5’11”, 189, Oshawa Generals, 03/21/2005)

Comments: Luke had some good zone entry plays that created chances for his team and he got a lot of shots on net. Early in the game he faked a dump to get the defenseman to cross his feet and then he quickly cut the other way and went around him on a partial breakaway but the goalie saved his 5-hole bid. He had another chance on a zone entry later in the game where he drove wide and cut underneath the defenseman and cut across the crease and tried to tuck it around the goalie. He played on the powerplay flank where he took a one-timer and had a couple of chances. He has solid puck-handling which allows him to make plays.

Jalen Lobo (LW, L, 6’0″, 176, Oshawa Generals, 02/09/2008)

Comments: Jalen is a tough winger who created chances with his toughness and strong work ethic. He took a beating in front of the net which not only helped to screen the goalie but also buy time and space for his line mates. He also used his body and played physical in the corners. He spent some time on the top line as a rookie and worked hard. He attempted some shots on the rush but most of them were blocked. He did not make a lot happen with the puck but his toughness and work ethic helped to complement his more skilled line mates.

Sam Roberts (LW, R, 6’1″, 180, Oshawa Generals, 05/21/2009)

Comments: Sam is a strong-shooting, physical winger who goes hard on both sides of the puck. He scored Oshawa’s only goal of the game with a bar-down snipe after receiving the puck and under-handling it. He led the game with seven shots on net. He was also noticeable on the backcheck and in the defensive zone where he came out hard to challenge the defenseman at the point. He is a smart player who puts himself in good spots to defend and gets himself into shooting positions.

Zachary Sandhu (D, L, 6’1″, 199, Oshawa Generals, 12/20/2005)

Comments: Zackary is a shut-down defenseman who also quarterbacks the powerplay for his team and can contribute a lot to the offense as well. He played the body well on the rush and angled the opponent to the outside, limiting all chances when he was on the ice. On the breakout he used some deception to buy time and then made good quick first passes. His solid puck-handling, good vision, and ability to make hard, accurate passes make him very successful as the quarterback of the powerplay. He can also shoot the puck quickly with strength and can get also off a quick one-timer too. Zack had a few rushes where he entered in the zone wide and then pulled the puck in towards his body to create a shooting lane and get pucks through. There was one pass he made on the powerplay that showed his skill with the puck as he made a backhand sauce pass to a teammate for a one-timer while not looking at the player. He was a stand-out player in this game and looks to be a real difference-maker at this level.

Onni Kalto (RW, L, 6’2″, 193, Oshawa Generals, 12/14/2006)

Comments: Onni uses his speed and toughness to be effective but he also shows flashes of skill with the puck. His speed is very noticeable through the neutral zone and on zone entries. He is able to drive wide and get a step on defenders. In the first period he skated wide around the defenseman, cut in underneath them and quickly transferred the puck to his forehand for a shot. He had a spin and shoot play in the offensive zone as well showing his grit to get pucks to the net. He didn’t possess the puck a lot in this game but when he did he made some impressive plays and showed a lot of potential. He was also a force on the penalty kill where his speed and toughness were on display, pressuring opponents hard and keeping his feet moving.

Owen Griffin (C, R, 5’10”, 160, Oshawa Generals, 04/08/2007)

Comments: Owen is a two-way center with elite skating, puck-handling, vision, and work ethic. He uses his speed in all areas of the ice to win pucks, pressure opponents, and also to make plays when the puck is on his stick. He has straight-line speed, quick feet, and very strong edges. He is very focused and engaged on the defensive side of the puck, showing a good stick and positioning in the defensive zone as well as being an excellent forechecker. He forechecks with speed but also with purpose, understanding where to angle and put his stick to cause turnovers. He intercepted a puck behind the offensive net and then made a quick centering pass leading to the only goal of the game for Oshawa and earning himself an assist. In the first period he used his speed to split the defenders and go in on a partial breakaway where he was slashed and earned a penalty-shot. On the penalty shot he faked and got the goalie to bite but then couldn’t get it past him as he deked to his forehand. He plays with high energy and is able to do so even when he is being double-shifted, as he was for a lot of this game, never seeming to lose a step. Owen was a major contributor on both the powerplay and penalty kill for his team as well. On the powerplay he was on the flank and took a one-timer that went off of the post. On the penalty-kill his good stick took away the dangerous lanes and prevented some quality chances, most notably on a 3v5 kill. He created some scoring chances with smart passes that he made but there were times in the game where he looked to pass when he had good shooting opportunities.

Michael Newlove (G, L, 6’2″, 171, Windsor Spitfires, 01/14/2007)

Comments: Michael stopped 35 of 36 shots on net in the victory over Oshawa. He was a difference-maker in this game with his big saves and confident puck-handling. He plays with good depth and is very athletic and quick in all of his movements. He can get across the crease and from the butterfly position to his feet very fast. Not only are his movements quick and fast but his brain reacts and reads the play fast too which allows him to be in the right positions in time. He also showed this high hockey IQ with his long passes to catch Oshawa on line changes. He made a couple of long passes into the neutral zone to create odd-man rushes for his team including a 2v1 chance because he read the play and saw they were changing. He was always ready to retrieve dump-ins and passed to the defensemen in the corners when pressured. Michael made many saves on the penalty-kill and from dangerous shots in the slot as well as a penalty-shot save. He was a huge factor in his team’s 4-1 win as they were outshot 36-27.

Jean-Christoph Lemieux (C, L, 6’0″, 190, Windsor Spitfires, 06/19/2008)

Comments: Jean-Christoff is a speedy winger with a high compete-level and an ability to create offensive scoring chances. He opened the scoring for Windsor with a one-timer backdoor goal on a 2v1 rush. He had many other scoring chances in the game, on the powerplay and even-strength, but was unable to capitalize on these. He also had an assist on the empty-netter goal with a nice retrieval and then made a quick pass to his open teammate.

Carson Woodall (D, L, 5’11”, 188, Windsor Spitfires, 05/26/2006)

Comments: Carson is a smooth-skating defenseman who shuts down the opponent and uses his strong vision and patience to advance the puck up the ice. He can shut down the opponent’s rushes with his strong defensive instincts and aggressiveness. He then controls the puck with his head up and makes a good first pass or takes his open ice to skate the puck. When he is pressured he uses the net well to cut off forecheckers and also uses deception to bait them into thinking he is doing something else with the puck. On one of these breakouts where he stopped behind the net he then made a hard, accurate first pass which led his team to a 2v1 goal. His puck-handling is very strong which makes him dynamic on the offensive zone blue line and able to quarterback the powerplay for his team. He is willing to jump down the walls in the offensive zone with the puck and can make deceptive passes to create chances.

Ethan Belchetz (LW, L, 6’5″, 227, Windsor Spitfires, 03/30/2008)

Comments: Ethan is a tall, physical forward who combines toughness with offensive production. He is 6’5′ and uses his body in the corners and along the walls to win pucks. His toughness along the wall in the defensive zone earned him an assist as he battled to chip a puck out to his teammate which led to a 2v1 rush and a goal. He finishes his checks and is hard to play against down low in the offensive zone as well. He had some nice passes and opportuntiies on the powerplay where he spent some time at the net front and some time on the flanks. On one play on the flank he walked in towards the middle of the and rang a shot off of the far post. He also made a nice backdoor look for a great scoring chance. Ethan scored the third goal of the game to give his team some breathing room. He received a pass on a rush and took a shot from inside the dots to the upper far-side corner. There were a few plays in the game where he didn’t handle pucks cleanly, one of these leading to a rush against. Ethan has a lot of potential because of the combination of size, toughness, and offensive talent. If he can improve his puck-handling he will be even more of a threat. He is very mobile for a player of his size.

Comments: Ethan had a goal and three asists in the game, factoring into all four of his teams goals. He is an undersized center who makes an impact when he’s on the ice because of his speed, work ethic, and play-making ability. He started off the game with a nice one-handed poke of the puck out of the defenzive zone to create a 2v1 where he then made a sauce pass across to his teammate for the goal. He uses his speed to create plays on rushes and attacks the middle to create space wide for himself. He takes a couple of steps in towards the mdidle to draw defenders in and then goes by them wide in the space he created. This is how he created the second goal of the game as he got a step on the defender this way and then took a shot on net that created a rebound for his teammate to bury. His third assist came off of another zone entry situation where he read that he had space to the middle and he skated across, executing a cross-and-drop. His final point of the game was the empty-net goal he scored in the final minute. Ethan is an impactful player because he uses his speed and gets pucks into the dangerous areas, being especially dangerous on rush situations.

Cole Davis (LW, L, 5’10”, 175, Windsor Spitfires, 06/22/2006)

Comments: Cole is a very fast center with good edgework and a hard, quick-release shot. He uses his speed through the neutral zone and can move laterally on his edges to manipulate defenders. He also uses his good edge-work to make cut-backs and Gretzky turns on zone entries to shake defenders and find trailers. He uses his good speed to be very effective on the penalty-kill as well where he looks to be a threat to attack offensively if the opponent turns the puck over. He drew a penalty with his speed as well as he got a step on the defender. Cole took some hard, low shots on the powerplay and he also showed that he possesses a one-timer. On the powerplay and on rushes he is able to execute hook passes to create passing lanes.

Beksultan Makysh (F, L, 5’10”, 159, Windsor Spitfires, 05/24/2008)

Comments: Beksultan showed some bright moments in the game against Oshawa. His skating and skill set are both solid and he uses deception to retrieve pucks. He had some time on the 5v3 powerplay and made a great pass to the backdoor. He also had a breakaway scoring chance and a scoring chance in the slot. He didn’t have the puck on his stick a lot in this game but when he did he factored into some quality chances and showed good potential.
