Game Grade: B-

Comments: By today’s standards Cowan is a below average sized left goalie with quick sharp lateral movement. He fought for his ice on point shots to maintain his sight lines. He showed good balance on incidental contact and pucks shot to his body or glove stayed with him.

Nathan Mayes (D, L, 6’4″, 194, Spokane Chiefs, 06/10/2006)

Game Grade: B

Comments: Mayes is a long lanky left shot defensive minded defender. At this point he is still developing his passing skills and all around offensive game. He plays a physical style and with added strength he could add intimidation to his game.

Owen Schoettler (D, R, 6’0″, 170, Spokane Chiefs, 01/23/2007)

Game Grade: C+

Comments: The 2007 Schoettler is a young solid right shot defender who is still gaining the confidence join the rush offensively. He is not overly physical but he skates well enough to establish his ice and he is strong enough to hold his ice after making contact. In the defensive zone he hits and pins to end the cycle.

Injured, Did not play

Berkly Catton (C, L, 5’10”, 162, Spokane Chiefs, 01/14/2006)

Game Grade: A

Comments: Catton is an undersized highly skilled left shot forward with creativity and a killer instinct in the offensive zone. He has speed but makes the game go at whatever pace he’d like. He is still gaining the strength to win physical battles at the NHL level but he is a dynamic presence on the ice.

Chase Harrington (LW, L, 6’0″, 185, Spokane Chiefs, 10/30/2007)

Game Grade: C+

Comments: Harrington is a below average sized October 2007 with good straight line speed and the skating posture that will allow him to gain speed as he gains weight and strength. It did not matter if Spokane was on offense or defense he seemed to be constantly around the puck. He used his speed to be an effective F1 on the forecheck but at this point he is not a physical presence. He is player to watch as he matures gaining power and explosiveness.

Lukas Kral (LW, L, 6’0″, 172, Spokane Chiefs, 02/03/2006)

Game Grade: B

Comments: Kral is a below average sized left shot left wing with very quick smooth hands and elusive 1 on 1 skills. At this point in his WHL rookie season he is still adjusting to North American hockey but id he learns to play a 2 on 1 game he has the offensive skill set to have a breakout year next year. Skating wise he shows an upright posture with a return leg that lands on it inside edge which makes him have an inefficiency to his glide.

Cameron Parr (LW, L, 5’9″, 181, Spokane Chiefs, 09/06/2006)

Game Grade: C+

Comments: Parr is an undersized left shot left wing who plays with grit, grime and has some bite to his game. He enjoys being engaged in scrums and having meaningful conversations with his opponents after whistles.

Hayden Paupanekis (C, R, 6’4″, 192, Spokane Chiefs, 12/14/2007)

Game Grade: B

Comments: Paupanekis is long lanky left shot 2007 center who seems to enjoy running into everything he sees. At this point he skating posture is still a bit upright but out of hard hockey stops he showed quick feet that will only get more explosive as he gains strength and power.

Jayden Kraus (G, R, 6’2″, 213, Victoria Royals, 11/18/2006)

Illness, Did not play.

Hudson Bjornson (D, L, 6’1″, 166, Victoria Royals, 02/24/2006)

Injury, Did not play.

Seth Fryer (D, R, 6’7″, 197, Victoria Royals, 06/23/2006)

Game Grade: C

Comments: Fryer is an incredibly long lanky right shot defender with a shoulder width skating base and three-quarter length fluid strides. His stride leg returns on its flat edge. In 2021 he was a 10th round draft pick in the bantam draft who is now averaging 12:20 TOI during his rookie WHL season. There is no doubt that he is a developmental project but standing 6’7″ and with an athletic skating base we feel he is worth the time. He is going to have to add snarl and aggressiveness for a chance to play but we feel there is a chance.

Matthew keller (D, L, 6’2″, 190, Victoria Royals, 02/10/2006)

Game Grade: B-

Comments: Standing at 6’2″ Keller is an average sized defensive minded left shot defender who can play both sides. Defensively he uses his body to keep shooting lanes clear and to pin his opponents to the walls to end the cycle. Offensively he is at his best when he goes with his first decision and moves the puck quickly.

Jerrett Ross (D, L, 6’1″, 165, Victoria Royals, 06/06/2007)

Game Grade: C

Comments: Ross is an average sized 2007 born left shot defenseman who was playing in just his sixth WHL game. Defensively there were times when things looked like they were moving a bit too fast for him but he did a good job of consistently being in the way. Offensively Ross kept things simple and the walls were his friends.

Keaton Verhoeff (D, R, 6’3″, 200, RHA Kelowna U18, 06/19/2008)

Game Grade: A-

Comments: Verhoeff is a 6’3″, 200lbs right shot 2008 born defenseman who in just his eighth WHL game earned the second highest time on ice among Victoria’s defenders. He is big strong and direct to contact. Verhoeff won battles and started transition. He started the game and on the opening draw he worked a hinge with his partner, handled a pass cleanly and fired a rocket up the middle that his center redirected into the offensive zone to establish a forecheck.

Escalus Burlock (RW, R, 6’2″, 206, Victoria Royals, 04/11/2006)

Game Grade: B-

Comments: Burlock is a thickly built right shot right wing who plays a no nonsense up and down wing. He looks to be a disruptive presence on the forecheck and at the top of the crease. With his size and strength we would like to see him add more anger and aggression to his whistle to whistle play. We don’t mean gooning it up. We do mean running guys over and intimidating.

Deegan Kinniburgh (LW, L, 6’0″, 171, Victoria Royals, 04/30/2006)

Game Grade: C

Comments: Kinniburgh is a below average sized left shot forward with quick feet and good straight line speed. He showed good game planning awareness as he did not run around and it was easy to see him communicating with his linemates or defensemen while he was down low. We feel Kinniburgh is a player who could make some noise later in his junior career as a development camp invite who surprises some people.

Logan Pickford (RW, R, 5’9″, 165, Victoria Royals, 01/08/2006)

Game Grade: B-

Comments: Pickford is an undersized right shot forward who can play center or wing. He plays a competitive two-way game relying on his brains and quickness to beat opponents to the puck and or valuable ice. He went undrafted in the WHL bantam draft but earned a spot on Victoria and is averaging 12:49 TOI per game during his rookie WHL season.

Cole Reschny (C, L, 5’10”, 179, Victoria Royals, 04/04/2007)

Game Grade: A-

Comments: Reschny is a dynamic left shot 2007 born center who is averaging just under point per game during his rookie year in the WHL. Positionally he is sound in all three zones and his movement off the puck has an objective that is usually a few steps ahead of most of the other players on the ice. He has first step explosiveness and can create separation out of a single stride as he moves through the neutral zone. High end, high upside talent.
