Burlington, MA – The Red and Black of Winchester High School traveled up Cambridge Street for an opening night game against the Red Devils of Burlington High School.
Both teams looked a bit rusty to start the game, but it didn’t take long for Winchester to find their game. They controlled most of the play in the period outshooting the Red Devils 12-2. Winchester’s sophomore forward Danny Collins was all over the ice, creating great scoring chances and playing solid defense. Burlington freshman goalie Cam Shanahan made some key stops to keep it a 0-0 game
The second period was more of the same with Winchester dominating play and outshooting Burlington 11-7, but Shanahan stood tall in net and kept it a 0-0 game for most of the period. But when Burlington took a penalty with 5 minutes left in the period Winchester would make them pay. Senior defenseman Trevor Mahoney blasted a shot from the point beating Shanahan to make it a 1-0 game and end the first.
The third period proved to be a better period for Burlington. While Winchester still controlled play, Burlington did a better job keeping shots to the outside and clogging up lanes, and it paid dividends. After a good defensive stand, Burlington broke into Winchester’s zone firing a shot on net leaving a juicy rebound which sophomore forward Will McLean buried over the outstretched goalie to tie the game 1-1. The third period would end 1-1 and go into overtime.
Both teams had a couple of chances in overtime but it would be Winchester’s Danny Collins who snuck one past Shanahan for the game-winner.
