
Canton, MA – We dropped by Canton Ice House today to get a second look at the Ed Burns Tournament, taking in a semifinal between Winchester and Natick. The first period started slow with both teams feeling each other out. Neither team had a Grade A scoring opportunity until senior forward Kevin Bertocci found the back of the net from freshman Luke Sardone and sophomore Chris McCarthy. This goal put the Red and Black ahead late in the first period following a Natick power play that the Red Hawks could not capitalize on. Shots in the first period were Winchester eight, Natick six and we went to the room with the score 1-0 Winchester.
The second period was all about the goalies as Natick’s sophomore Jason Danahy and Winchester’s sophomore Aiden Emerick kept the game 1-0 in a back and forth affair. Both goaltenders made some dazzling saves in their ends of the ice. Shots in the second period were Winchester nine for a two period total of 17 and Natick seven for a two period total of 13.
The third period was much like the second with both teams creating positive plays and scoring chances in the attacking zone. None were better than a post-to-post-and-out shot by Winchester with under nine minutes to play that was ruled no goal. The game would stay 1-0 until Bertocci added his second goal of the day. unassisted. on an empty netter with less than two minutes to play. The Red and Black would add another goal with 20 seconds left when McCarthy scored on a nifty pass from Sardone and Bertocci. Shots in the third were 11 for Winchester for a game total of 28 and 10 for Natick for a game total of 23. Final score: Winchester 3, Natick 0.
