Watertown, MA – The Tanners of Woburn High School went on the road to the John A Ryan Arena in Watertown to take on the D3 co-op team, the Raiders of Watertown/Wayland.
The first period was summed up in about a three-minute span, with Woburn capitalizing on their chances and scoring three goals. Senior captain Jack McEleney started the scoring two and a half minutes into the first. Woburn was on the penalty kill and McEleney stole the puck from a Raiders defenseman and then drove the net, sniping short side top shelf to give Woburn the 1-0 lead. Two minutes later sophomore forward Luke Hughes came off the side wall getting a shot to the net, Raiders goalie Patrick Johnson-Ciano made the initial save but a rebound found its way to sophomore forward Dillon Scallese who beat Ciano five-hole for the 2-0 lead. Then,10 seconds later Woburn would go up 3-0 as senior forward Matt Mahoney and junior forward Jack Lee ran a nice give-and-go play down low with Lee getting a pass from Mahoney and beating Ciano short side.
The Raiders needed a big push coming out in the second, but Woburn had other plans. They played a stingy defensive zone, limiting Watertown/Wayland to only a couple of quality shots on net. There wasn’t much offense either way until Woburn scored their fourth goal on the power play. Senior captain McEleney took a quick shot off the draw and Ciano made a pad save but the rebound sat in front of him and sophomore forward Avery Powers went hard to the net and banged it home giving Woburn the 4-0 lead. The period would end with Lee notching his second of the game. It came via a fantastic feed from McEleney who was circling behind the net and Lee beat Ciano high over his catching glove to extend their lead to 5-0.
The third proved to be even on the scoreboard but Watertown/Wayland had the most scoring chances this period. Woburn senior goalie Logan Roderick was solid, recording the shutout. He made a pack of saves all in a row on a few occasions. He was technically sound and square to the puck all game long and showed great rebound control. In the end, the early deficit was too large for the Raiders to overcome and Woburn would finish the game with a solid 5-0 win.
