Boston Latin Advances to Giordano Final with 2-1 win over Hanover

South Boston, MA – Boston Latin celebrated their 2024 State Championship with a ring ceremony before a packed house on Thursday at Murphy Rink. The Wolfpack came out firing on all cylinders and went up 1-0 on an Adam Whitney blast from the point that senior forward Odhran Mullan tipped past the Hanover goalie. Both teams had a power play chance but neither could capitalize and the period ended 1-0. Shots in the first period: BLS 10 Hanover 7

In the second period, Hanover controlled the play but couldn’t capitalize on any of their offensive chances as Boston Latin junior goalie Oliver Murphy turned aside all 13 shots. With 3:52 left in the frame BLS doubled their lead when Angelo Lester-Barrall fired a shot from the point into the net. End of 2 periods 2-0 BLS.

In the third period, both teams traded chances but it wasn’t until 45 seconds left in the game with the goalie pulled that Hanover’s Henry Phillips found the back of the net. Final score: 2-1 Boston Latin who advances to the Michael Giordano Christmas Classic Finals.

Winthrop surges to 4-2 victory over Lynnfield to advance to Giordano Final

South Boston, MA – Lynnfield came out strong and fast in the first period when Lucas Deraps buried a Brayden Anderson pass on the power play and the Pioneers were all over the Vikings early. Lynnfield would double their lead with 2:49 left in the first when Andrew Carbone scored unassisted for a 2-0 lead. Shots on net in the first: Lynnfield 7, Winthrop 8

The Vikings came out firing in the second as they tilted the play in their favor but with 2:49 left in the second period it was still 2-0 Lynnfield and then the Winthrop surge began.   With 2:30 remaining in the period Jay Fotiades scored with an assist credited to Bert Kline to get the Vikings on the board. Just 28 seconds later Mike Holgersen took a Phil Boncore feed and fired it home: the game was all tied. With 1:12 to go in the period Joseph Pumphret scored his first of 2 to give the Vikings the lead for good. He added his second of the day with 1 second left on a faceoff feed from Boncore and Holgersen and the Vikings went to the room with a 4-2 lead. Shots in the second: Lynnfield 3, Winthrop 12.

Winthrop kept the pressure on in the third period but neither team could add to their total and the game would end in a 4-2 Winthrop victory: they advanced to play the host school Boston Latin in the Final. Final shot totals: Lynnfield 13, Winthrop 32.
