Boston, MA – In a marquee matchup, it was the 2nd ranked Catholic Memorial Knights taking on the St Mary’s Lynn Spartans in the first round of the William Hanson tournament at Warrior Ice Arena on Sunday night. St Mary’s used some early forechecking pressure to jump out to a 1-0 lead at the 10:14 mark of the opening frame when sophomore Cam Marchand tipped home fellow sophomore Cole Alexander‘s shot for the Spartans. CM would have some chances on the power play a couple minutes later but freshman Connor Anderson stood tall in net and the teams would go to the locker room with the Spartans leading 1-0. Shots in the first period were: CM 13, St Mary’s Lynn 6
Catholic Memorial came out firing in the second period but again it was Anderson making some big time saves, none more impressive than a windmill glove save on a breakaway to keep CM off the board. However, CM would break through at the 6:27 mark when junior Michael Melvin would take a pass from senior James Baker and knot the game at 1. Junior Liam McKinney had a second assist on the play. After some big hits and near misses by both teams, the period would end with the score 1-1. Shots after two were CM 16 for a two-period total of 29 and St Mary’s Lynn 5 for a two-period total of 11.
The third period was all CM. The Knights took the lead for good at the 14:21 mark when sophomore AJ Ankstitus lit the lamp on a pass from junior Dan Antonellis and junior Christian Hinckle. CM added another goal from freshman Kellan Murphy with assists to Melvin and Jack McCourt with 5:54 left in the period to make it 3-1. The final tally of the night was McKinney from Hinckle and freshman Jackson Agnello with 2:09 to play to put the game on ice for the Knights. Final shot totals: CM 13 for a game total of 42 and St. Mary’s Lynn had 2 for a game total of 13.
