MIAA D1 Tournament: #11 Weymouth Starts Strong and Advances Over #22 Waltham in Round of 32

Weymouth, MA – Connell Rink was electric tonight for the first round of the MIAA tournament game between Waltham and Weymouth. The Wildcats got the scoring started on a great forecheck when Ryan Ferguson buried a Ryan MacDonald pass at the nine-minute mark of the opening period. Just six short minutes later, MacDonald would go bar down on a pass from Ferguson and the Wildcats were off and running this postseason. Weymouth’s Billy Lennon made sure the Cats would head to the locker room up 2-0 when he stuffed a Waltham breakaway with 33 seconds left in the period. Shots: Weymouth 17, Waltham 6

The Hawks came out in the middle period flying and trying to get back in the game. They finally solved Lennon at 10:53 on the power play when Ray DeVincent shot one in the net from the point and Billy Champion had an assist on the goal. Just 2:30 later, Weymouth would get its lead back when Ferguson dangled the puck around what seemed like the entire Waltham team and put a nifty backhander in the back of the net. Drew Gates scored from Roman Sousa at the 3:36 mark, making it 4-1 Wildcats. MacDonald would add his second of the game with 1:27 left in the period and the Cats went to the locker room up 5-1. Shots: Weymouth 10, two-period total of 27 and Waltham 11, two period total of 17.

After trading power play opportunities, Waltham showed they were not going to go away easily when Leo Dischino buried his own rebound, making it 5-2 Weymouth. The game was all but decided when Weymouth would score on an empty-netter by Max Mirowski to send the student sections to the exit, final score 6-2 Weymouth.  Shots Weymouth 8, game total of 35, Waltham 15, game total of 32.
