Arlington, MA – The 20th-seeded Lincoln-Sudbury Warriors hit the road to take on the fourth-seeded Arlington Spy Ponders in a Round of 16 matchup at the Ed Burns Arena
Arlington wasted no time asserting themselves, controlling play from the opening faceoff and setting a physical tone early. Both teams finished checks and battled hard along the boards, but it was the Spy Ponders’ relentless forecheck that made the biggest impact. Arlington consistently got pucks in deep behind the LS defensemen, grinding down low and keeping the play hemmed in the offensive zone. Their sustained pressure led to a commanding edge in zone time and a 3 to 1 advantage in shots. With 8:18 remaining in the period, Arlington earned their first power play and made it count. Senior Evan Sparks calmly quarterbacked the unit from up top, sliding a crisp pass to senior Cam Petrillo at the elbow. Petrillo fired a hard shot on senior goaltender Jesse Rich, and the rebound kicked out to senior forward Nolan Russell, who was waiting at the top of the crease. Russell buried the loose puck into the open net to give Arlington a 1–0 lead. Arlington continued to dictate the five-on-five play, keeping LS on their heels right up until the final minute. A late LS penalty sent the Spy Ponders back to the power play as the horn sounded, closing out a dominant opening frame with Arlington holding a 1-0 advantage
Arlington needed just a minute of carryover power-play time to make another statement in the second period. Russell took control, carrying the puck himself through the neutral zone and into the LS end. From the top of the circle, he let go of what looked like a routine shot, but it slipped five-hole past Rich to extend Arlington’s lead to 2-0. The middle stretch of the period turned into a special teams battle, with both sides earning power-play opportunities. LS generated some of its best scoring chances of the night during that span, but senior goaltender John Snider stood tall. He came up with multiple key saves, shutting the door and preserving the two-goal cushion. Arlington then flipped the momentum in transition. After one of Snider’s stops, senior Armen Vartanian quickly sent the puck up ice to junior Chuck Fecteau, who chipped it into the middle for a streaking junior Casey Yunes. Coming through with speed, Yunes carried into the zone and snapped a quick shot far side over Rich’s blocker to make it 3-0. LS went back to the power play shortly after, but Arlington’s penalty kill remained sharp and aggressive, denying clean entries and clearing rebounds. Much like the opening frame, Arlington controlled the closing minutes of the period, firmly in command as they headed to the third with a three-goal lead.
Arlington wasted no time putting the game out of reach in the third period, striking just 30 seconds in. Off a faceoff in LS’s end, Russell chipped the puck below the goal line where Petrillo gathered it in stride. Petrillo circled the net and attempted to feed a teammate in the slot, but the pass was blocked and deflected right back to his stick. Without hesitation, he reset and rifled a shot into the top far-right corner, beating a sliding Rich to give Arlington a commanding 4–0 lead. Just over a minute later, Arlington was whistled for a penalty, giving LS a power-play opportunity. However, Arlington’s penalty kill continued to be relentless, pressuring the puck and clearing rebounds to snuff out the chance. LS gained a bit of momentum afterward and generated some offensive zone time, but Arlington’s defense held firm and Snider turned aside any attempts to spark a comeback. The closing minutes grew increasingly physical and chippy, with multiple penalties handed out and players from both sides ejected as tensions boiled over. When the final horn sounded, Arlington skated off with a 4-0 shutout victory, advancing to the Elite 8 in dominant fashion.
