Arseni Ilyin (LW, L, 6’2″, 191, Spartak Moskva, 12/24/2007) Arseni Ilyin is a 6’2′, 191-pound left-shot winger with a pro-sized frame who plays a depth offensive role for Spartak Moskva in the MHL. His coaching staff views him more as a complementary two-way winger rather than a primary offensive driver. From an offensive standpoint, Ilyin generates 1.93 shot attempts per game with 1.23 hitting the net and produces just under one Grade ‘A’ scoring chance per game (0.96) with a 10% conversion rate. He can move the puck effectively within structured offensive sequences, but he his still developing the ability to think two passes ahead. His puck possession metrics raise concerns. His puck battle success rate of 45% is too low for a player with a 6’2′ frame and he can struggle to maintain puck possession under pressure. Physically he does not use his frame to his advantage and he has not learned to leverage his size to dictate play along the boards or at the top of the crease. In my opinion, Ilyin’s NHL projection depends heavily on whether his physical tools begin to translate into consistent puck possession and offensive production over the next two to five years. As he adds strength he could become more assertive in puck battles leading to increased scoring chances, he could develop into a depth NHL winger with a power-forward style. If those improvements do not materialize, his current production and possession numbers suggest he is more likely to settle into a depth professional role in Europe.
