Artem Guryev | Toronto Marlboros U15 | GTHL | L | D | 6’3″ | 198 | Peterborough Petes | 2019 | Russia | 2003 | 2020-2021: C |
Neutral Zone NHL’s Ian Moran’s comments, June 2021: This kid is a project who will end up playing at 6’3 and around 220 pounds… and who doesn’t want that on the back end. He skates well, has good agility and I expect that to improve as he trains and gets stronger.
Neutral Zone’s Brian Murphy’s comments, May 2021: Guryev is a big strong defense first lefty who has a no nonsense approach and really enjoys physical contact and or conflict. His high end athleticism is very evident in his ability to step up at center ice to blow up plays and deliver huge hits.
OHL: Peterborough Petes vs Oshawa Generals, February 2020: Guryev was more involved and looked more comfortable in this game. His decision making was still direct and simple, but he looked more confident in transition and when calling for passes from his partner. He was his usual strong physical presence along the walls and in front of his net. His lone mistake came on a blocked point shot, but he recovered quickly showing good straight line speed and a willingness to sacrifice his body when breaking up the resulting two on one.
OHL: Peterborough Petes vs Oshawa Generals, December 2019: Guryev continued to be brought along slowly by the Petes’ coaching staff earning only has a handful of shifts, but he played a simple game keeping tight tights and staying out of trouble.
OHL: Peterborough Petes vs Kingston Frontenacs, November 2019: Guryev played an easy mistake free game for the Petes. He defended with his stick in the lanes, his hips low and delivered quick timely passes in transition. Another game where the Petes’ coaching staff used home ice advantage to match his shifts to keep him out of trouble, Guryev did step up on a Frontenacs forward during neutral zone transition and lay a huge open ice hit.
2018 Minor Midget International Silver Stick, December 2018: Guryev is emerging as one of the more impressive physical d-men in the age group. With his combination of size and speed, Guryev has the ability to deliver devastating hits along the boards and the open ice. Guryev continues to show well as a big, skilled, puck possession d-man who is moving up our rankings as the year progresses.
Wendy Dufton Memorial Tournament, November 2018: Guryev stood out instantly with his ability to move quickly and change gears when carrying the puck. He has hard accurate shot from the point. A big, skilled, puck possession Dman. Great footwork and quick transitional skills set Guryev apart from many other D in the 2003 group. He is good on the rush and not afraid to pull up and use defenders as a screen as he did against Brantford scoring on a laser to the top corner. If he sees open ice he takes it and has the hands to make moves in tight situations and the speed to get back defensively. He quarterbacks the PP and will walk in to get off his shot rather than shooting from a distance.
Toronto Titans Minor Midget Tournament, September 2018:A big, skilled, puck possession Dman. Artem has a great skill set which allows him to control the play most shifts. He is offensive minded, often times leading the rush or controlling the puck below the opposing team’s goal line. He moves well with a wide base making it very difficult for opponents to take the puck off him. We are interested to see how he can defend against other top players as the season progresses.
