BCHL: Chilliwack at Powell River

General Game Notes: BCHL action on November 24th, 2023 between the Powell River Kings and the Chilliwack Chiefs. An entertaining game right from puck drop as there was end to end action. Despite having the lead going into the 3rd period, the Kings couldn’t hold on, as the Chiefs scored four unanswered goals to win the game by a score of 5-3.

Hunter McInnesChilliwack ChiefsBCHLRD6’1″183Nanaimo, BC2005Not yet rated

Game Grade: B

Comments: McInnes is a smooth skating defenseman who reads the play well in his own end. Understands when to put pressure on his opponents and when to contain them (especially along the walls). Was able to collect pucks in his own end and wheel through all three zones, gaining zone entries and creating chances off the rush. Had a shot mentality as he would shoot from off angles and continually got shots through to the net with screens in front.

Brian MorseChilliwack ChiefsBCHLRD6’1″173Maine | 2024Fresno, CA2003Not yet rated

Game Grade: B

Comments: Morse was effective on the back-end at retrieving pucks with ease and breaking his team out. All night, he was able to collect dump ins by having his head up, shoulder checking, moving his feet and making the right play according to the pressure he was receiving. His first passes were decisive, crisp and on the tape.

Elliot Dutil
Victoria GrizzliesBCHLLC5’8″163Lindenwood | 2024Montreal, QC2003Not yet rated

Game Grade: C+

Comments: Dutil is a skilled forward who likes to create plays off the rush. Continually kicked pucks wide in transition and either drove the net or sat high in the zone to receive pucks and either get shots on net or put pucks to dangerous areas.

Stone RolstonChilliwack ChiefsBCHLRRW6’4″191Bloomfield Hills, MI20052023-2024: C

Game Grade: B-

Comments: Rolston had a relatively quiet game, but still created a presence using his size and strength. Made some big hits that separated his opponents off the puck, where he was able to regain it and distribute to his linemates to turn the other way with it. Stops in front of the net, avoiding box outs and trying to get tips on pucks from the point.

Brady MilburnChilliwack ChiefsBCHLLLW6’2″194Lake Superior | 2024Kamloops, BC20052023-2024: C

Game Grade: A-

Comments: Milburn is a powerful forward who moves well for his size. Many power-forward like traits as he can play physical, regardless what zone he is in. Will get in shot lanes to block shots in the defensive zone, and use his speed to turn pucks the other way. Once he gets moving, his stride is powerful and his body allows him to trek through whatever is in his way. Hard to defend against as he challenges his opponents with speed off the rush and will attack the net. Owns good passing skills and a hard shot.

Mateo MrsicChilliwack ChiefsBCHLLLW5’10”177Colorado College | 2024Surrey, BC2004Not yet rated

Game Grade: A

Comments: Mrsic makes the players around him better. He creates offensive chances for himself with his speed and skill-set, but also gives his linemates more time, space and open looks on net too. His speed creates problems for defenders as he attacks the OZ off the rush and can make the extra play to eventually beat the defender, creating mini breakaway opportunities. Owns superb vision as he can make nifty passes, either that of a drop pass or a no-look back-door play. Will shoot the puck as well, getting to areas where he can get his quick release on net.

Nathan MorinChilliwack ChiefsBCHLLLW5’11”165Harvard | 2024St-Augustin-de-Desmaures, QC20042021-2022: C

Game Grade: A-

Comments: Morin was excellent on the PK all night for the Chiefs. Did a lot of the little details right that can go unnoticed game to game. Would block shots if necessary by filling lanes and putting his body on the line. Broke up plays with an active stick and continually pushed the pace on the PK forecheck to disrupt his opponents breakouts. Scored a short-handed goal in the 3rd period to cap off a beautiful display of tenacity, hard-work and selflessness.

Matthew ArgentinaChilliwack ChiefsBCHLRC5’11”185Philadelphia, PA20032021-2022: C
2020-2021: C

Game Grade: A-

Comments: Argentina scored the third and fourth goals for the Chiefs. He got the game tying goal, followed by the game winning goal in the 3rd period, ultimately leading to a comeback victory. Both his goals, ironically were scored in the same fashion. Argentina was able to use his speed and strength to beat his defenders to the net where he was able to jump on the loose pucks, making no mistake. Despite the two goals he scored, his line created plenty of offense and were threats from the OZ blue line down.

Anthony YuPowell River KingsBCHLRC5’9″180Air Force | 2024Baldwin Park, CA2004Not yet rate

Game Grade: B

Comments: Yu showed some skill and talent in the offensive zone. Was able to collect pucks off rush scenarios with speed, having his head up and make plays accordingly. Whether was was a quick pass back-door or a quick release on net, he typically created offense this way. Scored the first goal of the game with a quick release wrist shot that went post and in.

Jace HarderPowell River KingsBCHLRLW6’2″177Lake Country, BC20062024-2025: C

Game Grade: B+

Comments: Harder has good puck poise and the unique ability to slow down the game. Can collect pucks in the offensive zone and survey the ice while moving his feet. By doing so, he creates separation from his opponents while being able to make high end passes to his teammates. Owns a good skill set and is a duel threat as he can shoot and pass. In the 2nd period, made a beautiful back-door pass on the PP, which found his teammate (Mendelson) who made no mistake scoring.

Adam MendelsonPowell River KingsBCHLLC5’11”183Dollard-des-Ormeaux, QC2003Not yet rated

Game Grade: B

Comments: Mendelson was a key element to the Kings PP. Orchestrated much of it from the half-wall as he was the puck carrier making decisions on where to place his passes in order to create offensive chances. One of those players who likes to distribute the puck with his head up, and then move his feet to areas where he can receive it back. Will crash the net hard with his stick on the ice, hacking and whacking at anything in the net front area.

Noah EyrePowell River KingsBCHLRRW6’0″195Quinnipiac | 2024Pittsburgh, PA2004Not yet rated

Game Grade: B-

Comments: Eyre is a speed winger who likes to penetrate off the rush. Was able to receive pucks entering the offensive zone driving wide, where he could then cut to the middle and get shots towards the net. When he attacked with speed, he created problems for defenders as he could make high-end stick plays allowing himself to get quick released shots on net.

Anthony LucarelliPowell River KingsBCHLLC6’2″190Long Island University | 2024Chatham, ON2003Not yet rated

Game Grade: B-

Comments: Lucarelli had a relatively quiet night in terms of offensive chances. A bigger forward who plays a heavy game, engaging physically and getting to the hard areas. His faceoff plays, as a center was impressive as he won many draws cleanly creating offensive zone time/chances.

Zander StewartPowell River KingsBCHLLD6’3″186West Kelowna, BC2003Not yet rated

Game Grade: B+

Comments: Stewart plays a well rounded game and contributes at both ends of the ice. In the defensive zone he stops on pucks, engages in puck battles and typically comes up with them. As a bigger defender, he can use his size to shield the puck along the walls, win battles and move the puck up the ice. Offensively, he is a catch and shoot type player (from the blue line). Can use his long reach to push pucks out in front of him and get quick shots on net with traffic.

Kailus GreenPowell River KingsBCHLRC6’0″178Kelowna, BC2004Not yet rated

Game Grade: C+

Comments: Green goes hard to the net in the offensive zone. He will take a beating to get there, but gets rewarded for it. Scored a scrum type goal, hacking and whacking at a loose puck, eventually knocking the puck five-hole.

Joonas LinnavuoriPowell River KingsBCHLRRW5’10”170Helsinki2003Not yet rated

Game Grade: C+

Comments: Linnavuori was a spark plug right from puck drop. Always has his feet moving on the forecheck, pressuring his opponents to turn over pucks. Despite not creating much offensively, his physicality (despite being on the smaller side), and his ability to create energy was a spark to his team whenever he was on the ice.
