Charlie Schenkel

Charles SchenkelSoo GreyhoundsOHLRG6’5″195Soo Greyhounds | 2021Ottawa, ON20042021-2022: C

OHL: Soo Greyhounds vs London Knights, February 18, 2022: In the 8-5 loss to London Schenkel came on relief with a little over eleven minutes left in the game. He faced three shots making three saves.

CCHL: Rockland Nationals vs Smiths Falls, February 5, 2022: In his first game since moving down from the OHL, Schenkel stopped 12 of 15 in a 3-2 loss to Smiths Falls. Despite the rough numbers, Schenkel looked good, especially in the first half of the game, as almost all of the shots he faced were grade A opportunities. He looks very big and wide in the net, relying heavily on covering the bottom half of the net with his butterfly. With a stance as wide as his and relying on his butterfly, Schenkel could improve on his patience on his feet. He tends to automatically drop on any shot and slide on any lateral play, which leaves him vulnerable to a good shot upstairs or if he needs to readjust to a bounce. With not having many games played this year, hopefully Schenkel can find his groove again back in the CCHL as he shows potential. Grade: C

U20: 2022 NHL Draft Eligible Goalie Report, December 8, 2021: Last 5 game snapshot- Charlie has had a bit of a rough adjustment transitioning to the OHL and the high pace and numerous lateral plays. Has only started 4 games and has come in for one relief appearance. The Greyhounds give up numerous odd man rush situations nightly, so it becomes a pressure cooker playing in that system. Schenkel is a monster figure in the net. He has pretty good mobility for a goalie his size. That coupled with Charlie catching with his Right hand, he has some tools that no other prospect has in this class. One thing that Charlie is really going to have to continue to develop on is his skating. He starts to widen his feet out as the puck enters the zone which starts to limit his
mobility and creates holes for him as he drops into his butterfly. Too many pucks have gone through Schenkel. With his size, he needs to identify where his positioning will best benefit him. Right now, he looks like he is playing a little deep in his crease which is creating problems for him.

U18: HEO Midget AAA, February 19, 2020: Schenkel is a tall, athletic goalie who only got one start here but kicked out 26 of 27 shots. He tracked the puck well, he stayed composed under heavy pressure and moves well side to side. He had quick up and down movements and stayed on his feet which most younger goalies are quick to go down. He has a quick glove and is a talented puck catcher. Instinctual and able to read the play. With his size and his skill playing against older, bigger competition he has obvious OHL Draft appeal. Major upside. Grade: B+
