Derek Mullahy – The Process

Derek Mullahy #35 (Left Glove, G, 6’1 181, Cedar Rapids Roughriders USHL, ’01):

(4 Star Amateur Rating, NHL Grade – Free Agent) Goalie

Neutral Zone Goalie Scouting Coordinator Ean Mendeszoon says “Mullahy is a very interesting prospect as he was passed over in last year’s NHL Draft, but the Dexter product is looking to show NHL scouts that he is worth the chance with a good year in the USHL before he heads to Harvard. Mullahy has decent size, great feet and is very aggressive and out on top of his crease to challenge shooters. Mullahy gets very low in his stance but he is great at tracking pucks through screens and has great rebound control and doesn’t allow second chances. The impressive part about Mullahy’s game is his skating ability as he can act as a third defenseman in many cases for his defenseman as he was very quick and agile to all pucks near him and wasn’t hesitant to make a play or outlet. One play he scoped the puck from the corner, backwards skated all the way behind his net and then reversed it back to his defenseman in the corner he just came from. He gets low which allows him to get a lot of power in his pushes as he has great lateral movement and made a handful of flashy split glove saves. Mullahy was passed on last year but he has the skating ability, stick skills and that little bit of swagger that makes him an NHL prospect that shouldn’t be overlooked come this June.”

USA Hockey Select 17 National Development Camp, July 2018: Mullahy has been one of the top goalies in this age group for the past few years. He made the move from Shattuck to Dexter this past season and was one of the top goalies in prep hockey right away. He’s a quick, athletic net-minder with sharp, efficient movements and a composure about him that seems to calm his teammates. He has a quick glove hand, he can play the puck and has excellent recoveries where he can be sprawled out down low and pop back up, set his feet and make the next save. He was pretty consistent here even in the last game against Forrest where he let in 5, at least 3 of them he had no chance at and he rebounded well in the All-Star game allowing just one goal. One of the top goalies in the country who stopped 73 of 82 shots and did a nice job of reading the play and tracking the puck. Mullahy has the technical ability, he’s controlled, calm and athletic with the ability to make any save. He’ll return next season to Dexter. College: Harvard

MA Festival (2001s), May 2018: Derek continued his solid play after a big season for Dexter. He is calm and confident in the net. He squares up shooters and takes away angles. He is athletic and never gives up on the play. He didn’t give up many rebounds here and didn’t give up many easy goals. College: Harvard National Camp Selection

NE Prep Report Two, February 2018: Derek is big goalie who fills a lot of the net, but the most noticeable part to Derek’s game when we have seen him play is his quick explosive movement around the crease. When the puck is moving around and shooters think they have an opening to shoot, Derek is very quick to take it away. His technically sound movement with his great athletic ability and quick reflexes make him a tough goalie to beat in most situations during a game. College: Harvard

NE Prep Prospects Report 1, December 2017: Derek spent two seasons out at Shattuck before returning to MA this season and he looks about as athletic a goalie as you will find in the prep ranks. Listed at 6’0 177 – he makes acrobatic saves look routine when he is on. He uses his legs better than most: not only doing a full split but stretching for a little extra if he needs to take a toe save. He stays true to his angles when shots are coming in and his reaction times are excellent. He reads and reacts better than most goalies at the prep level: goes from thought to action in an instant. On nights when the offense spends most of its time at the other end he might get bored, but he is capable of stealing a game or two this season by himself. College: Harvard

USHL Phase 1 Draft Recap, May 2017: Derek was drafted 33rd overall.

USHL Draft Phase 1, May 2017: Derek was Neutral Zone’s 93rd overall ranked prospect and 5th ranked goalie. Other goalies that were ranked include Spencer Knight, Josh Langford, Cameron Rowe, Alexandros Aslanidis, Jack Williams, Jacob Zacharewicz, Trevor Giwerowski, Joe Sharib, Aidan Harper, Henry Wilder, Ethan Haider, Marco Duronio, Marc Smith, Ben Fritsinger, Logan Stein, Connor Hasley, Caleb Meyer, Robbie Nuchereno and Matthew Schoer.

Shattuck St. Mary’s vs NJ Avalanche U16, November 2016: Mullahy looks to be making a smooth transition from U14 to U16 team as he showed well here. He is quick, athletic and moves very well laterally. He showed off a nice glove and robbed a few NJ Av forwards on point blank. He’ll get some NTDP attention if he can keep this level of play up.
