BCHL: February Re-cap, March 3, 2023: Bono is a long lengthy centerman who plays a north/south game. Did a great job playing within himself doesn’t try to do to much and plays a smart game. Controlled pucks below the dots and looked to create when coming out of the corners. Brings an edge with him finishes checks gets to dirty area really competes. His reach is disruptive on the forecheck got his stick on numerous pucks which ended up leading to zone time. Grade: B-
BCHL: All Star Game, February 11, 2023: Ethan picked up the second star of the game and scored a slick goal in this outing. He is a heavy strong left-shot that plays a direct style. He is strong on the puck and uses his frame and reach to protect the puck from opponents. He sees the ice well and slips to spots just before the puck gets to him. He has a high motor and compete level. Took good angles on the forecheck and forced bad decisions. Scored a slick goal by receiving a pass in space and then quickly snapping a backhand over the goalies glove. Skilled player that is tough and creates in all three zones. Grade: A-
BCHL Playoffs: Langley vs Alberni, April 23, 2022: Bono finished the game with 15:20 TOI including 1:34 while on the power play. He did not play in short handed situations. He went 6 for 12 on face-offs and had 1 minor penalty for an inadvertent high stick off of a face-off. Bono created offense off the rush as he challenged defenders in 1 on 1 situations, often shooting the puck through their legs (as a screen play). Did a good job at gaining zone entries wide, stopping on a dime, and distributing the puck low too high for the second wave of offense. Wasn’t afraid to jam pucks from off angles and take the puck to the blue paint. Had many great chances in game 6 but was unable to finish. B
BCHL: Victoria vs Alberni Valley, February 21, 2022: Bono is a speedy forward with a quick first stride that allows him to gain time and space on his opponents. Wheeled the puck through the neutral zone and had good offensive zone entries, either driving the puck wide, stopping up to find the second wave of offensive or shooting the puck through the defenders’ legs (using them as a screen). Attacks the net from off angles, jamming pucks into the goaltenders’ feet creating second chance opportunities. Stops hard in front of the net, hacking and whacking at loose pucks. Wins puck battles that allow quick transition and more offensive zone time. Game Grade: B+
BCHL: Nanaimo Clippers vs Alberni Valley Bulldogs, December 12, 2021: Plays in all scenarios for Alberni as he’s a staple on the PP and the PK. Scored the 1st goal of the game for Alberni (Shorthanded) as he poked a loose puck at his own blue line, carried it down the ice (2 on 0), faked the pass and shot it top shelf to beat the goaltender. The goal was a great display of skill level, speed, and awareness of the situation. His deception was great from the hash marks down as he continually made decisions with the puck that were hard to read as a defender. For example, many times, despite being under pressure was able to stickhandle around the opponent’s sticks and bodies, giving him more time and space to make plays to his teammates. He doesn’t panic with the puck which helps him in moving around and controlling play. Game Grade: B
