BCHL: February Re-cap, March 3, 2023: The North Dakota recruit Hobie Hedquist is a 2003 birth year and stands 6’2′ tall and 194 pounds. The native of Heron Lake Minnesota has seen action in 33 games thus far in his second season with Alberni Valley and owns a 21-10 record over that span. In this contest on February 10th on the road in Powell River he stopped 32 shots surrendering three goals in the 5-3 win. The future Fighting Hawk uses his size very well keeping his chest up with a tight butterfly to fill space. His strong movement stems from a condensed stance and constant shoulder checks to know exactly where plays could go. At times his feet will widen hindering him a bit but he seems to regain his feet when play permits. Seeming to be a smart and sharp goaltender he tracks pucks well and controls rebounds or pounces on rebounds quickly. His post play/down low he makes the right decisions and moves well in his reverse. With a good showing here we will see how he finishes up the regular season heading towards playoffs. Grade: B+
BCHL: January Goalie Report, February 6, 2023: Hobie Hedquist is a 2003 born goaltender from Heron Lake Minnesota and is in his second season in Alberni Valley. The university of North Dakota Commit stands 6’2′ and 194 pounds. He has appeared in 25 games thus far this season and holds a 14-10 record. In this contest on January sixth on the road in Nanaimo he stopped 21-23 shots to help secure the 4-2 win. Hedquist has a very low and condensed stance with a high chest. He has a wide butterfly which makes his movement hindered a bit. Reads and tracking seemed a strength as his head always followed the puck all the way in. Struggling to maintain his feet and set them Hobie found himself out of position and unable to recover. With a big win and a light workload we will see how Hedquist continues his campaign. Grade: B-
BCHL: Chilliwack vs Alberni, December 6, 2022: Despite giving up 3 first period goals he was rock solid the rest of the way. A great mixture of goaltending styles as he has structure but athleticism. Smooth skater as he moves well from low to high (post to top of the crease). Stops hard gets set on the shooter and makes his save selection accordingly. His ability to make 2nd and 3rd saves was impressive. Had high compete on loose pucks as he tracked it with his head and stayed low to the ice. On certain rebounds he got to his feet to get set instead of sliding out of position. Was super quick especially laterally as well as technically sound on his posts. QUICK glove hand!! Grade: B
BCHL Playoffs: Langley vs Alberni Valley Game #6, April 23, 2022: Hedquist is a high end talent at the BCHL level. Made many point-blank saves in this Game 6 to keep it close and within reach. Quick edgework on his feet and knees. Utilizes the RVH well, keeping his hips up, moving post to post and sealing the holes properly. Leads with his head in all scenarios as he is an excellent puck tracker. If he lets out a rebound, scrambles well to find the loose puck – gets low, keeps his hands in good position and finds the puck with his eyes. High battle/compete level which allows him to make those highlight reel saves. ELITE glove hand. B+
BCHL: Victoria vs Alberni Valley, February 21, 2022: A bit of a mix between old school and new school. Efficient edgework on his knees as he moves well side to side, post to post. Utilizes his RVH well, as he seals the ice low and covers the short side of the posts. Uses his reaction skills and instincts to read the play and makes saves based off this, opposed to being “technical”. Owns active hands as he made multiple glove saves from in tight that were absolute show-stoppers. Was the best player on the ice. Grade: A-
BCHL: Goalie Report January 14th-16th, January 19, 2022: Hedquist had a perfect game this weekend earning a shutout win while stopping 34 shots. He has great size and plays very big in the crease. His greatest strength is his patience on his feet. He never dropped early, and showed a great ability to read shots of the blade of shooters’ sticks. His rebound control was excellent this game as well, and his ability to track shots through screens from the point was great. Hedquist is having a great season so far, and will look to stay hot going forward. Grade: A
Select 16’s USA Hockey National Camp, July 31, 2019: Hedquist is a tall, athletic, composted netminder who was steady here kicking out 80 of 89 shots and showing a strong technical game. He has a quick glove hand and can catch pucks well. He used his body to absorb pucks and gave up very few juicy rebounds, and somehow managed to always make saves look easy, due to his spot on positioning. He has the size and the mobility you look for in a young goalie and has to the right spots showing; he has the vision and hockey sense to put himself in the best position to make saves. Grade: A- College: Colorado College
2003s: Minnesota 2003 Rankings, March 17, 2018: Hedquist plays up at the 16U level for Sioux Falls and he had a tremendous season. Coming in around 6’2, athletic build, and is very quick, particularly for his size. We like his awareness, always scanning for threats, and his willingness to play the puck. He gets square to shooters and moves very quickly laterally. He’s not afraid to come out and challenge when the situation calls for it and his confidence grew from the beginning of the season to the end of the year. A USNTDP camp invite next season. College: Colorado College
U14: MN Bantam Elite League, August 30, 2017: A potential star here. Hobie has good size and quick feet. He had good anticipation and kept his team in games when they were out to lunch. His skating and balance still need some work but there is a lot of potential here with the size and athletic ability.
