Mathieu Bourgault | Salmon Arm Silverbacks | BCHL | L | F | 6’2″ | 180 | RPI | 2022 | St-Bruno-de-Montarville, QC | 2003 | 2020-2021: C |
Neutral Zone NHL’s Ian Moran’s comments, April 2021: Mathieu plays a hard heavy pro styled game. He is abrasive. He likes body contact and is not afraid to initiate contact in the offensive zone. I like the fact that he’s going the NCAA route because the strength and conditioning coaches at RPI can and will really impact his hockey future. He obviously doesn’t play the most glamorous style, but he plays the style professional coaches demand. Mathieu is a project and a long way way off, but his style is made for the pros.
BCHL: Cowichan Valley Capitals vs Nanaimo Clippers and Vernon Vipers vs Salmon Arm Silverbacks, April 9, 2021: Mathieu is a big, power forward with a strong north-south stride and gritty playing style. He plays tough and physical along the wall and in the tough areas of the ice. He goes hard to the net with and without the puck looking for rebounds. The ‘03 takes hits to make a play and dishes out some big hits of his own. His quickness and explosiveness need improving but he is effective when he keeps things north-south and simple. His shot is heavy and he has really good vision and passing abilities. He pressured the puck and jumped on a turnover to assist the teams’ fourth goal of the game midway through the third period. Grade: B
MPHL Showcase, November 21, 2019: Bourgault is a tall, athletic forward who is strong on the puck, finishes his checks and gets to the net. He scored a nice goal on a breakaway showing he can pull away from opponents in the neutral zone and has the strength to bury it with pressure on his hip. The ’03 was an early round pick in the QMJHL and his size, speed and power combination make him a high ceiling prospect with NCAA/CHL upside. Grade: B
