Fyodor Avramov | Kapitan Stupino | MHL | R | LW | 6’3″ | 190 | St. Petersburg, RUS | 2005 | 2023-2024: C |
Game Grade: B
Comments: This wasn’t a perfect game for Avramov but he had a couple of great moments that made me consider him the player of the game. His best play of the night came on a powerplay in the second period. He flew down the ice while his teammate entered the zone. Fyodor cut into space with speed, received a pass, blew past the flat footed defensemen, and made a quick move on the goalie to walk around and score on an essentially open net. Speed is the name of his game right now. He has the ability to fly past just about everyone on the ice; he just needs to do it more consistently. His only other great play came in the third period when he rushed up ice with speed. He showed off some skilled but clunky hands to walk around the first man on the ZE. Then he opened his hips and created a ton of separation on the next level of defense before turning and hitting his teammate that was cutting into the slot to create a great scoring chance. Other than those two plays, Avramov was pretty much invisible. He did not touch the puck much and when he did he was unable to generate much. His two great plays tonight prove he has the capability to create some great opportunities but he needs to figure out how to do it consistently and how to play with supreme confidence every time he touches the puck.
Arseni Ilyin | SKA-Yunior Krasnogorsk | MHL | L | RW | 6’1″ | 181 | Petrozavodsk, RUS | 2007 |
Game Grade: B-
Comments: 15 year old Ilyin looked much more comfortable in tonight’s game than I have seen in the past. His mechanics still need some refinement and his motor could be higher but good overall game from Arseni. He showed off a good playmaking ability and was able to generate some quality chances through his passing. He executed a shot pass, head fake to pass, threaded the needle in the OZ, and pulled off a couple of hook passes as well. He showed off some good puck protection on the rush putting his body between man and puck and using his edges to create separation. He drove hard to the net on the rush and played a well rounded game. He looks very comfortable at this level already and has all the time in the world to improve his skill. As long as he puts in the effort and can lift his energy to a high level, consistently each night, he will become a star in the MHL before his draft year.
Yevgeni Novikov | SKA-Yunior Krasnogorsk | MHL | L | C | 6’1″ | 176 | Ust-Kamenogorsk, KAZ | 2006 | 2023-2024: C |
Game Grade: C
Comments: This was only Yevgeni’s third game in the MHL and I was impressed with his level of play. He pulled off some skilled moves including a well timed drag and shoot from the slot and multiple spin escapes to get away from pressure. I didn’t take too many notes on him but I enjoyed the pace and effort he brought to the game. He will definitely be someone I keep an eye out for next time I watch Yunior play.
Nikita Surayev | SKA-Yunior Krasnogorsk | MHL | L | RW | 5’10” | 150 | Karaganda, KAZ | 2005 | 2023-2024: C |
Game Grade: B-
Comments: This was not a great game by Surayev’s standards. He was pretty much a background player for a majority of the game and did not touch the puck very often. When he did he usually opted for a quick shot on goal. He can rip the puck, but 95% of the shots he took went wide or soared over the net. He was able to pick up a goal with a rocket on the PP but other than that he was very unnoticeable. His pace was incredibly slow and he looked a bit lazy both with and without the puck. He was able to show off the skill I have seen in the past in the SO, scoring a beautiful goal with a slick cut deke in tight.I have liked Surayev so far this year but today’s game was surprisingly poor.
