OHL: Erie (2) at Brantford (3)

February 19, 2024

Lucas Moore (D, R, 5’10”, 190, Brantford Bulldogs, 06/07/2005)

Game Grade: A-

Comments: We felt that Lucas had a very solid game to the point where you didn’t notice him very much, and most times that is a good thing. Lucas is a very good problem solver we feel behind his goal line retrieving pucks. It’s not very often that Lucas doesn’t make a good first pass or skate the puck out of trouble. Lucas was relied upon very much in this game playing top pairing minutes and on special teams. In the third period Brantford pretty much went with 4 defenseman and he was on the ice every second shift. There wasn’t much to his game offensively today, but it was probably due to the fact that they needed him to keep it simple, not try and do too much and get the 2 points.

Noah Roberts (D, L, 6’0″, 187, Brantford Bulldogs, 12/02/2005)

Game Grade: B+

Comments: We liked Noah’s compete and physicality throughout the game. He needs to play this way because there isn’t much to his game on the offensive side of center. He is always first to the puck when he can and when he is not he is not nice to play against because of his ability to angle and pin and kill plays in the defensive zone. He boxes out in front of his net very well and seems to be stronger than most of his opponents. His ability to find time and space from F1 and make positive plays/passes in the defensive zone are average at best, his ability to skate the puck out of the defensive zone again are average at best. He was playing top pairing minutes with Lucas Moore because Brantford has been hit with injuries. Playing pro hockey will be a big step for him because there are bigger/longer defenceman that do what he does as good or better.

Lawson Sherk (LW, L, 6’1″, 198, Brantford Bulldogs, 05/03/2003)

Game Grade: B

Comments: Lawson had a good game we feel. A bad turnover inside the ozone blueline was careless but other than that he played a responsible 200 ft game. As team captain he leads by example and doesn’t cheat. Always getting above the puck, responsible down low and a good F3 on the forecheck. Struggles to create offence at this level but knows his role and is excellent on the penalty kill. Doubtful he turns into a pro hockey player if he does it will be this same role he plays in the OHL.

Adrian Rebelo (RW, L, 6’2″, 186, Brantford Bulldogs, 07/22/2004)

Game Grade: B

Comments: Big body forward Adrian we thought was a good player when on the ice for Brantford. He made some nice plays along the wall and was heavy on the forecheck at times winning battles. He skates really well for a big man, showing above average speed and agility. He is a role player now with now power play or penalty kill time. If he were to develop to be a player that’s difficult to play against (think Raffi Torres) he might be useful at the next level. We didn’t see much of that in this game though. There was no intimidation factor in his game.

Malcolm Spence (LW, L, 6’1″, 193, Erie Otters, 09/22/2006)

Game Grade: B+

Comments: We feel that Malcolm was Erie’s best player today. He pushed the pace when he was on the ice most of the time and seemed to have or be around the puck the whole game creating offence in doing so for himself and others. Malcome is an above average skater with good balance, a quickness to get to loose/available pucks and speed to take on defenders 1v1. We didn’t notice him cheating and puck support seemed to always be on the right side of the puck. Development is the key for Malcolm and next year will be important to see if he can take himself and his team to the next level.

Matthew Schaefer (D, L, 6’1″, 170, Erie Otters, 09/05/2007)

Game Grade: B

Comments: Matthew wasn’t as dominant as I had hoped he would be at this stage. He didn’t look out of place, and he showed flashes of being a difference maker, but it wasn’t consistent. His lack of strength at this level was evident as his was pushed off the puck too many times. His vision and puck skills are still above average but his ability to use these skills to problem solving and find time and space for himself was average. We felt he looked good running the power play as far as zone entries and from up top. He needs to get stronger and push the pace more to live up to the number 1 pick overall billing.
