OHL: Mississauga at Brantford

General Game Notes: A good game to watch with both teams battling it out for top spot in the conference. It was a tight game right up until the end then Lardis iced it with an empty netter. Vanacker really stood out for us. A big body winger who bangs and makes good decisions/plays in all 3 zones. He also has some offence to his game, getting to the net for Brantford’s second goal off a rebound.

Comments: Had a good game, a really solid player/game. Nothing too flashy and he can play in all situations. He lacks height and reach but is mobile, aware, first on all pucks and moves it very efficiently and fast. We feel he gaps up, angles well and is a very intelligent player playing to his strengths. He isn’t going to be a banger and/or win many 50/50 net front or corner battles but he can still be an effective player if used properly. He ended the game a +3 and was a big part of the win logging a lot of minutes.

Comments: An excellent game – stood out. Good time for the rookie to have his first 2 goal game in the OHL. He was fortunate on his second goal centering the puck from behind the goal line only to have Mississauga put it in their own net. His first goal was him getting dirty in the house and finding a loose puck. We feel he is finding his way in the OHL and trending the right way. He is not overly big but is not afraid to mix it up and was responsible in all 3 zones. He was a late draft pick 2 years ago and after 2 years of junior B he has worked for everything he has gotten so far. If he keeps on trending this way he could turn into a really good player in this league and possibly play at the next level.

Comments: Excellent game – he stood out. A big bodied defenseman who moved really well and hit like a truck. He didn’t shy away from anything physical., punishing opponents with open ice hits and wall battles. Effective on the penalty kill and blocking shots, he owned the front of the net. Was first on pucks and made a good first pass all night. You’re not going to get getting much offence from him, he has 1 goal in 100 OHL games but defensively lights out and intimidating. We feel he is a hard guy to play against, knows his limitations’ and doesn’t try to do too much.

Comments: We saw him play as a minor midget and I was impressed with his physicality then, he was hard to play against. This was a below average game for him. He did have a few decent hits along the wall but had a couple of bad turnovers behind his goal line that led to Brantford’s first and third goals. His skating really hasn’t developed as much as we would have liked, and the offensive game isn’t there and probably won’t develop at this level. We feel that he isn’t as hard to play against as he was in minor midget and that is going to have to change soon for him to be an effective player in this league.

Comments: He had a good game but his team needed more offence from him in this one. He has almost 200 games in the league and is the team captain, he played his role very well. Always seemed to be first on the puck and solved problems behind his goal line and in the defensive zone very well. He gaps up and angles well. He wasn’t overly physical but played the body well, stick and pinning when he had the chance and never got out muscled. He was on the first unit power play and moved the puck effectively.

Comments: He had a good game, but Mississauga needed more from him in this one. He had a great finish on a 3v1 beating the goalie high blocker from about 20 feet out. Small in stature he didn’t win too many 1v1 battles for 50/50 pucks but when he had first touch, he was able to find time and space or make a positive plays to a teammate most times. Showed composure with the puck when he had it and controlled speed through the neutral zone. We feel he is a smart player with good offensive and defensive habits.
