OHL: Oshawa at Ottawa

David BedkowskiOshawa GeneralsOHLRD6’4″208Oshawa Generals | 2022Toronto, ON20062024-2025: B+

Game Grade: B-

Comments: The December 2006 Bedkowski is a long strong right shot defender with the footwork and awareness to play both the right and left sides. On his first shift of the game he made his presence felt with an aggressive step up at his defensive blueline. Bedkowski might have gone down to a knee but in a few years and after gaining a combination of strength and power his opponents will go flying. Offensively he showed the skills to slide his lower hand up or down the shaft which helped have a good first touch and a good first pass. When the puck was on his stick he kept things simple and confidently went with his first option. He was given two giveaways for making the right play and getting a zone clear to the far blueline and a 200′ foot clear while shorthanded. We actually view these as poised plays, not giveaways. On the night he earned 15:49 in total ice time including being second among Oshawa’s defensemen with 4:32 while shorthanded (leading defenseman had 4:35). For the night he finished -1 with with 0 points, 0 shots, 1 hit, 3 giveaways, 2 takeaways and for the season he is winning 53% of his 50/50 puck battles.

Luca MarrelliOshawa GeneralsOHLRD6’1″185Oshawa Generals | 2021Toronto, ON20052023-2024: C+

Game Grade: B+

Comments: Marrelli is a strong October 2005 right shot defender who played the game on the balls of his feet as he showed a forward leaning skating posture that made him look smaller than his listed 6’1.25′, 185lbs. Offensively he scanned the ice before the puck was on his stick and he understood that there are times when you simply need to make the easy play to relieve pressure. He made a beautiful pass on Oshawa’s second goal after he crashed into the high slot looking to be a one-time option. Instead the pass jammed him and Marrelli used right inside edge to direct the puck to his backhand and then fired a perfect royal road pass that #11 Matthew Buckley put into an empty net. He also showed nice puck poise while moving along the offensive blueline where there were a few times he held the puck in shooting position as he waited for his opponent to slide out of the shooting lane. His shot was hard low and he shot with a purpose. In the defensive zone he was positionally sound but as we mentioned earlier his forward leaning posture limited his lateral quickness when trying to end the cycle. For the game he played a team high 26:21 including 1:40 on the power play and 3:21 while shorthanded. He finished +1 with 1 primary assist, 1 shot, 1 grade ‘A’ opportunity, received 1 hit, had 1 shot blocked, 5 giveaways, 8 takeaways and for the season he is winning 61% of his 50/50 puck battles.

Lucas RodriguezOshawa GeneralsOHLRD6’2″179Oshawa Generals | 20222006Not yet rated

Game Grade: LV

Comments: Rodriguez is a lanky right shot defender who played both the right and left sides. He showed a long stride and deep knee’d skating posture that allow him to gain speed and he gains weight. For the night he totaled 6:06 in ice time. He did not play on either special team’s unit. He finished even with 0 points, 0 shots, 2 giveaways and for the season he is winning 50% of his 50/50 puck battles.

Tyler GrahamOshawa GeneralsOHLLRW5’11”186Oshawa Generals | 2022Cambridge, ON20062023-2024: C

Game Grade: B

Comments: Graham is a slightly below average sized left shot forward who can play both wings. He showed a shoulder width skating base with 3/4 strides and full cross-under while changing direction or crossing over. He played in straight lines and looked to be at the top of the crease whenever possible, He had two assists with the first coming off his foot when he was positioned at the top of the crease and the second coming after he looked to give a one-timer pass into the slot but the pass jammed his teammate and the teammate then gave a royal road pass to the back door. On the night he earned 11:24 in total ice time including 0:26 on the power play. He did not kill penalties. For the game he finished +1 with 2 assists, 1 grade ‘A’ opportunity, 0 hits, had 1 shot blocked, 4 giveaways, 3 takeaways and for the season he is winning 40% of his 50/50 puck battles.

Tristan DelisleOshawa GeneralsOHLLC5’10”162Oshawa Generals | 2023St. Andrews West, ON2007Not yet rated

Game Grade: LV

Comments: Delisle is a below average sized left shot center with a forward leaning skating posture and an inside edge glide. Despite only playing 4th line minutes he was noticeable due to his attention to detail and surprising pop when making body contact. On the night he earned 4:49 in ice time. He did not play on either special team’s unit. He finished even with 0 points, 0/1 on face-offs, 1 hit, 0 giveaways, 2 takeaways and for the season he is winning 43% of his 50/50 puck battles.

Caeden HeinsOshawa GeneralsOHLLLW6’1″179Oshawa Generals | 2023Vero Beach, FL2006Not yet rated

Comments: Heins is a lanky left shot forward who tore up 16AAA hockey last season to the tune of 35 goals, 37 assists and 72 points in 54 games for Florida Alliance. He did not play.

Beckett SenneckeOshawa GeneralsOHLRC6’2″175Oshawa Generals | 2022Toronto, ON20062023-2024: B+

Game Grade: B+

Comments: Sennecke is a left shot forward with an NHL frame who showed high end puck poise and passing skills in this one. He showed a deep knee’s shoulder width skating base with a long fluid stride and a return leg that lands on it’s flat edge. As he gains core strength we feel that his stride will eventually end with a toe snap. Early in the game we loved the situational awareness he showed as he recognized Ottawa had a two forwards trapped below Oshawa’s goal line. Instead of rushing a poor pass Sennecke calmy looked like he was going to try to fire a pass through a tight lane only to make all three opposing forwards scramble to get their sticks in passing lanes before he used his defenseman for a clean breakout. Offensively he showed a smooth curl and drag snap shot that looked to get onto the goalie before he was expecting it and he did have a hard one-timer from the left dot-lane as the shooter on the power play. On the night he earned 19:27 in total ice time including 2:21 on the power play. He did not kill penalties. he finished the game even with 0 points, 3 shots, 1 grade ‘A’, 2 hits, received 2 hits, had 1 shot blocked5 giveaways, 6 takeaways and for the season he is winning 49% of his 50/50 puck battles.

Ethan TomsOshawa GeneralsOHLLC5’11”177Oshawa Generals | 2022Norwood, ON2006Not yet rated

Game Grade: LV

Comments: Toms is a strong quick and agile left shot forward. He showed a deep shoulder width skating base with powerful strides and a powerful cross-under. He totaled 4:42 in ice time.

Benjamin DanfordOshawa GeneralsOHLRD6’1″185Oshawa Generals | 2022Madoc, ON20062023-2024: B-

Game Grade: B

Comments: Danford is an average sized right shot defender who played both the right and left sides. He retrieved pucks with his head on a swivel locating the second wave of the forecheck and attempted to trap the forecheckers going the wrong direction. Even though he scanned the entire sheet on breakouts there were times when it looked like he had made his mind up that he was going to make a pass even if there was a stick or body in the lane. Defensively he was patient and poised, as he simply outwaited his opponents into mistakes. He had four shots with all four being quick release heavy snap shots while moving laterally along the offensive blueline and three of them generating rebounds. We liked how he used an upwards leg drive when making body contact as he consistently knocked his opponent off his stride and separated them from the puck. For the game he finished second among Oshawa players with 21:32 in total ice time including 3:24 on the penalty kill. He finished the night even with 0 points, 4 shots, 1 grade ‘A’ opportunity, 2 hits, received 2 hits, had 1 shot blocked, 6 giveaways, 5 takeaways and for the season he is winning 50% of his 50/50 puck battles.

Owen GriffinOshawa GeneralsOHLRC5’10”158Oshawa Generals | 2023Markham, ON2007Not yet rated

Game Grade: LV

Comments: At this point the 2007 Griffin is a slightly undersized highly skilled right shot right wing who is still adjusting to life in the OHL. The former 6th overall selection in the 2023 OHL Priority Draft earned 4:40 in total ice time. He did not play on either special team’s unit. He finished even with 0 points, 0 shots, 1 hit, 1 giveaway, 0 takeaways and for the season he is winning 48% of his 50/50 puck battles.

Joshua BradyOttawa 67sOHLRD6’0″191Ottawa 67’s | 2023Peterborough, ON20062023-2024: C

Game Grade: C+

Comments: Brady is a solid right shot defenseman who played both the left and right sides. Defensively he maintained net side positioning and showed the strength to hit and pin his man to the wall which led to ending the cycle and clean breakouts. On face-off wins he was well prepared and used a five foot bump pass to his partner at the near post or used a center reverse to come out the strong side. In the neutral zone offensive transition he worked to be a back diagonal for his partner and he moved his feet after receiving a pass. We would like to see more confidence and zip on his passes. On the night he earned 9:14 in total ice time including 0:20 on the power play. He did not kill penalties. He finished the game +1 with 0 points, 0 shots, 1 giveaway, 3 takeaways and for the season he is winning 57% of his 50/50 puck battles.

Kaleb DietschOttawa 67sOHLLD6’3″180Ottawa 67’s | 2023Niagra on the Lake, ON2007Not yet rated

Comments: Dietsch is a long lanky left shot 2007 defender who has split time between the CCHL’s Ottawa Jr. Senators and the Ottawa 67’s. He did not play in this game.

Frankie MarrelliOttawa 67sOHLLD5’11”187Ottawa 67’s | 202220062023-2024: B

Comments: Marrelli is an undersized smooth left shot defender who takes pride in a solid two-way game. He did not play in this game.

Nicolas WhiteheadOttawa 67sOHLLC5’10”149Ottawa 67’s | 2023Orlando, FL2007Not yet rated

Game Grade: B

Comments: At this point in his physical development Whitehead is a slight left shot forward with an explosive stride and balanced edge control. Offensively he used his skating ability to drive opposing defenders off their defensive blueline on line rushes and to be in constant motion while cycling. We liked how he played with his stick blade on the ice and he showed a soft first touch on both his forehand and backhand. His passes were on the money. After offensive zone puck retrievals we like how he recognized when Oshawa’s defensive zone coverage had collapsed below the tops of the circles and he used indirect passes to his point men. He played the left point on the top power play unit and his eyes were always up scanning the ice looking for downhill tips, backdoor passing options and shooting lanes through screens or partial screens. On line rushes he recognized mismatches in speeds and either sprinted through the defender to the back door or broke his skating down to be a shooting option in the high slot. For the night he earned 11:30 in total ice time including a game high 5:05 on the power play. He did not play while shorthanded. He finished even with 0 points, 3 shots, 4 grade ‘A’ opportunities, 1/3 on face-offs, had 1 shot blocked, 1 giveaway, 0 takeaways and for the season he is winning 38% of his 50/50 puck battles. His 50/50 winning percentage obviously tells us that the 2007 is still gaining strength but is finding a way to contribute.

Henry MewsOttawa 67sOHLRD6’0″183Ottawa 67’s | 2022Ottawa, ON20062023-2024: A

Game Grade: A-

Comments: Mews is a heady right shot defender who lead his team in ice time despite having 4 penalty minutes. Tonight he showed a smooth glide and an ease to his skating that will allow him to earn an opportunity to play against the other team’s top unit at the next level. Defensively his gaps were tight and he moved laterally to pinch rushes off near his defensive blueline. He did get a penalty with twelve minutes left in the third after failing to recognize that the opposing forward was effectively attacking the offensive blueline on a 1on4. On the play Mews had a tight gap but he was playing with an over extended stick. His over extension pulled his weight out over his toes and limited his lateral mobility. We feel Mews thought the over extended stick would force his opponent to dump the puck but it did not. Offensively he showed a soft first touch and settled bouncing passes like they were flat. he activated into the rush recognizing which lane to fill and at what pace. He had a quick release snap shot from a poor angle but we liked it because he shot with the purpose of generating a rebound instead of firing it high and wide. Mews also had a quick stick one-timer from the left dot-lane that he got good wood on but unfortunately for him was headed for the middle of the net so the goalie made a sprawling right leg save. On the night he totaled 27:45 in ice time including 4:45 while on the power play. He did not play on the penalty kill because his two penalties were Ottawa’s only penalties. He finished even with 0 points, 2 shots, 2 grade ‘A’ opportunities, 4 PIMs, received 2 hits, had 1 shot blocked, 8 giveaways, game high 13 takeaways and for the season he is winning 51% of his 50/50 puck battles.

Charlie HiltonOttawa 67sOHLLLW6’5″196Ottawa 67’s | 2022Oshawa, ON2006Not yet rated

Comments: Hilton is a September 15, 2006 who is 6’5′, 200lbs. The left shot forward did not play in this game. He is a developmental work in progress who played U18 hockey last season after being drafted in 2022 with the #270 overall by Ottawa 67’s in the OHL Priority Selection.

Kimi KorblerOttawa 67sOHLLRW5’10”157Ottawa 67’s | 2023Davos, SUI2006Not yet rated

Game Grade: C

Comments: Korbler is a below average sized left shot forward with a deep knee’d shoulder width skating base and powerful strides. This is his rookie season in the OHL and he played a steady two-way game. In the offensive zone he showed the balance and strength to extend possession and we liked how he used the net as a pick which allowed him to lose his coverage to become a net front screen. Four minutes into the third period he showed nice game awareness and explosiveness as he recognized his defenseman was caught up the ice and he sprinted into the open ice for a breakaway. On the play he stayed on the near side post and we would have like to see him change his route to angle himself towards the far post. It was still a grade ‘A’ scoring opportunity but he limited his options by staying on the near post angle. On the night he earned 9:23 in total ice time including being second among 67 forwards with 1:48 while shorthanded. He did not play while on the power play. He finished even with 0 points, 1 shot, 1 grade ‘A’ opportunity, received 3 hits. 1 giveaway, 1 takeaway and for the season he is winning 40% of his 50/50 puck battles.

Caden KellyOttawa 67sOHLRRW5’11”193Ottawa 67’s | 2022Mississauga, ON20062023-2024: C

Game Grade: C+

Comments: Kelly is an undersized right shot forward with a thick powerful build to go with a deep knee’d shoulder width skating base and strides that finish with a toe snap. He finished the primary assist on Ottawa’s second goal after he anticipated a loose puck along the right mid-wall and then fired a knee height shot from the hash marks that was tipped short side. Offensively he kept things simple playing in straight lines and using his strength to protect the puck. Defensively he maintained line-ups and used an active stick to deter passes. For the game he finished +1 with 10:11 in total ice time including 0:20 on the power play. He did not kill penalties. He had 1 assist, 0/1 on face-offs, received 1 hit, 5 giveaways, 2 takeaways and for the season he is winning 42% of his 50/50 puck battles.
