General Game Notes: A wild offensive game with a number of momentum swings in this one. Sudbury came out of the gates quickly scoring the first 4 goals of the game. Mississauga chipped away at the lead and finally erased a 6-3 lead late in the third but ultimately lost the game 8-7 in overtime.
Ryerson Leenders (G, L, 6’1″, 179, Mississauga Steelheads, 06/01/2006)
Game Grade: B-
Comments: Leenders came in at the start of the second in relief with his team down 5-2. He settled things down and played his usual steady game for Mississauga. He stopped 16 of 19 shots in the last two periods, a number of them point blank chances from the Sudbury forwards. He really could not be faulted on any of the 3 goals against. He battled hard on the OT winner, making the initial save on a clear cut breakaway chance only to be left alone with the Sudbury trailer. Leenders gave his team a chance to win and was a key factor in helping Mississauga secure at least a point in this game.
Jakub Fibigr (D, L, 6’0″, 171, Mississauga Steelheads, 07/22/2006)
Game Grade: B+
Comments: Fibigr played a ton for Mississauga in this game and was one of their best two way defenders today. As the season progresses, he seems to be getting more minutes and a more prominent role on the Mississauga defensive unit. He was active from the backend and able to generate quality chances on the secondary attack. His speed with the puck was noticeable and he was confident to get in and make plays knowing he could get back and defend. He played in the top pair of role for today and was more productive on the offensive side of the puck than in previous viewings. He showed some skill on the offensive line making good adjustments to get pucks through to the net and showed the ability to walk the line with his quick feet until he found an opening. He picked up two assists in this one and ripped a few quality shots to the net through traffic. Defensively, in the first period during Sudbury’s onslaught, he was not on for anything against and handled the pace coming at him effectively with decent gap control. He used his quick feet to win pucks and showed an active stick with good reads in the lane to intercept passes directed at the net.
Parker VonRichter (D, R, 6’1″, 183, Mississauga Steelheads, 05/17/2006)
Game Grade: B-
Comments: This steady defender played a stay-at-home game and made simple plays up the ice. He was competitive in his zone and fought for positioning in front of his net. Parker made a few quality reads on offense today and was a big part of two goals by jumping in aggressively to keep the offensive attack alive. He competed defensively but could have done better with his gap management today, particularly early in this one. Sudbury came out of the gate quickly, he seemed back on his heels rather than stepping up close off the pace through the neutral zone. He is a versatile young defender who is playing a trusted role for Mississauga but needs to continue to work on lengthening out his stride. Improvements in his skating technique and his quick first step will allow him the opportunity to win more foot races to pucks.
Finn Harding (D, R, 6’1″, 198, Mississauga Steelheads, 03/02/2005)
Game Grade: B
Comments: Harding had a quality offensive game in this viewing today. He scored a beauty late to tie the game where he found a seam trailing in support and ripped a shot by goaltender. He added two quality assists with heads up passes set up with his ability to activate and jump in to support the attack. He showed good puck handling today, rarely panicked under pressure and got pucks up ice to his forwards. Harding was adequate on the backend and tightened up defensively as the game went on. Early in the first there were very few on the Mississauga backend who could handle the Sudbury pace on the attack.
Reed Gee (D, L, 6’0″, 181, Mississauga Steelheads, 03/12/2006)
Game Grade: Limited Viewing
Comments: This 2024 draft eligible player had a limited impact on the game. No scouting notes for this viewing. As a younger player he was difficult to play against, showed the athleticism for open ice hits and cleared his net front with meanness. At this point we feel he is still finding his game in the OHL.
Jack VanVolsen (C, L, 6’1″, 188, Mississauga Steelheads, 01/12/2006)
Game Grade: C+
Comments: We are seeing improvements in the offensive output from Van Volsen as the season progresses. He was most effective with the extra man where he has a set up as the shooter on his off wing. The one timer comes off his stick with pace and if he improves his accuracy has the potential to score more in this shooting position. He is a big body who handles pucks well and is not afraid to play a heavy game along the walls. After a few sleepy games in earlier viewings he seems to be coming on and getting to the net more often. He is going to need to find another gear in his forward skating if he’s going to have a chance to raise his game in the second half this season. He had a couple tough reads in this game where it was caught in no man’s land and had no chance of winning the foot race.
William Eggleton (LW, L, 5’11”, 174, Mississauga Steelheads, 02/19/2006)
Game Grade: Limited Viewing
Comments: This 2024 draft eligible player had a limited impact on the game. No scouting notes for this viewing. As a younger player playing for the Mississauga Senators Eggleton showed high hockey IQ and compete. We liked the awareness he showed to find the soft areas in coverage, the strength he showed while battling for 50/50 pucks and his ability to protect the puck with his eyes up scanning the ice. At this point Eggleton is still finding his footing in the OHL.
Mason Zebeski (LW, L, 6’1″, 186, Mississauga Steelheads, 10/04/2005)
Did not play
Lucas Karmiris (C, R, 5’11”, 181, Mississauga Steelheads, 09/27/2006)
Game Grade: B+
Comments: This late birthday 2006 forward is not eligible until the 2025 draft but he continues to raise his play in his second season. He was among Mississauga’s top forwards today. He showed good net drive and scored twice in close – one on tip in and one on a beauty backdoor feed. He is a solid player with a low center of gravity and was difficult to contain around the net today. He had 4-5 quality chances on top of the goals he scored and showed good energy in traffic with an experienced Sudbury defensive unit. He played in all key situations for Mississauga today and created chances playing at center or either wing. We would like to see him bare down and win more face-offs when playing center. He lost more draws than he won today and will need to focus on this area of his game as he enters his draft year next season.
Luke Misa (C, R, 5’10”, 170, Mississauga Steelheads, 02/28/2005)
Game Grade: B-
Comments: Misa continues to be one of Mississauga’s most noticeable offensive players. He generates good pace in his skating and gets to top speed quickly. He’s an upright skater who has agility and the ability to avoid hits. He used this effectively to get out of the way of body checks a number of times today. He was also effective at using this agility to create the space and elude defenders on the cycle. He was dangerous through a neutral zone and backed defenders off. He showed good vision on the rush, particularly on the sixth goal where he hit the trailer with an elite cross ice feed while moving at full speed. Misa was strong in the face-off circle today – he won majority of his face-offs. One error on a lost draw worth calling out. Lost draw in his zone and he lost his assignment as well, leaving the opposition centerman all alone and the puck ended up in the back of the net. He will need to tighten this up down the stretch as games get tougher and more defensive.
Macgregor Richmond (RW, R, 5’9″, 180, Mississauga Steelheads, 08/06/2006)
Game Grade: Limited Viewing
Comments: This 2024 draft eligible player had a limited impact on the game. No scouting notes for this viewing. This was our first viewing of Richmond.
Porter Martone (RW, R, 6’3″, 196, Mississauga Steelheads, 10/26/2006)
Game Grade: B
Comments: This late birthday 2006 right shot forward continues to show as elite offensive forward. He has been in a bit of a goal scoring slump recently and ended it today with an elite goal in tight with a high class finish. He had a number of quality chances throughout the game and was snake bit but the effort and willingness to get to the net was there for him. He is not eligible until the 2025 draft but is already turning our heads with his scoring ability, his size, and his crafty play in traffic. Martone has been among the leading goal scorers for the Steelheads all season long and is arguably their best all round offensive player at this young age. He plays a heads up, unselfish game to set up the attack and can score or set up his teammates – usually with high skill. As he matures and develops his two way game he could turn into a dominant player next season. Tough read for him today on the game winning goal where he worked hard on the backcheck but circled away from his net rather than stopping…He missed an opportunity to check Sudbury’s top forward on the play and could have prevented a goal.
Kieron Walton (C, L, 6’6″, 211, Sudbury Wolves, 04/22/2006)
Game Grade: B
Comments: This lanky left shot forward is figuring it out. His game is maturing and work ethic is improving compared to viewings earlier in his career. He has size, reach and speed in his game and was difficult to handle when he got to speed through the neutral zone. Walton made an elite net drive and back door feed to Yearwood on Sudbury’s third goal. The defenders looked like they were standing still and Walton feathered one through for an easy tap in. He is not overly physical for his size but he gets his big body and long stick on loose pucks when he is working away from the puck. He played mostly on the wing in this viewing, this was is fine by us. He didn’t win many draws when he played down the middle and also looked a little lost on the d-zone coverage at times.
Nathan Villeneuve (C, L, 5’11”, 192, Sudbury Wolves, 04/13/2006)
Game Grade: B+
Comments: High energy game for Villeneuve, especially early in this one. He was engaged in all zones of the ice and competed away from the puck to get open. He played a smart game down low in both ends – always in the right spot and in the right position to support his teammates. Not afraid to finish checks and mix it up with anyone in this one – he played an aggressive game and took the one on one battles seriously on both sides of the puck. He scored on a great feed from Goyette where he set up the give and go, he found the open seam and finished. Villeneuve started the play in the neutral zone with a quick burst on the attack and finished it by getting to the net. He played with energy and compete in his game and had few dominant offensive shifts in each period where he protected pucks and was tough to contain with his low center of gravity.
