Owen Millward | Janesville Jets | NAHL | L | G | 6’3″ | 203 | Davis, CA | 2003 | Not yet rated |
NAHL: Goalie Report, New Year Addition, January 6, 2021: Millard is a big goalie who played well for his team in two offensive games that featured lots of shots and chances. His greatest strength this weekend was his recoveries, which he is very quick with and is able to get set in his stance from the butterfly position fast. He also did a good job of using his stick in the butterfly to control rebounds on low shots, and was effective at doing this on point shots through screens as well. At times he loses track of where attacking players are in the offensive zone, but he excels at playing the first shot. He uses his size and positioning to make it very difficult for opposing players to beat him clean on straight shots. Overall it was a good weekend for the big goalie and one that he can build on going forward. Grade: B-
NAHL: Goalie Report, 11/12-11/14, November 2020: Millward is a big goalie who got better as the weekend went along, and he capped it off with a great overtime win stopping 22 of 23 shots. He excels at controlling rebounds on shots that are off the ice, as he uses his hands well to control pucks. He made several big saves on good scoring chances by using his size well, by keeping his shoulders big and square while in his butterfly to not allow pucks to go over him. Millward at times can flatten out too much when attackers are coming at dead angles off the goal line, but Saturday he seemed to do a better job as the game went on of not giving shooters net on bad angle plays. Overall it was a big win for Millward and his team on Saturday, and it is good to see him progress each game this weekend as well. Grade: B-
NAHL: Goalie Reports, 11/6-11/7, November 2020: As per usual, goalie coach Larry Clemens and the Janesville Jets have an intriguing, young, draft-eligible prospect between the pipes again this season. Fresh off his call-up to the USNTDP, 2003-born Owen Millward was thrown into the deep end in the season opener against Fairbanks after his partner was removed due to apparent injury. The 6’3, 203lbs native of Davis, CA, is a an absolute monster between the pipes, towering over traffic in front. Milward has a presence in the net that is almost palpable. He recruits good power in his stance with a deep knee bend, which allows him to move with a speed and agility not often seen in goalies his size. He is very aware for a young goaltender, scanning for threats often any time the puck is in a dead-zone or in the corner, allowing him to be in position early when the play develops low-to-high. He stepped right into this game and immediately had a calm, assured posture rarely found in goalies this young. He limited rebounds and made the game look easy. He is often in position on his feet well before the play develops, and as mentioned above has the power to get side to side with ease either on his feet or sliding. He also has the skating ability to recover back to his net in scramble situations, which keeps him playing inside the 6×4 instead of chasing pucks outside the crease. The goal he did relent looked like it fooled him, and he was perhaps screened inadvertently by his own player. Not a great goal, by any standards, but forgivable considering the circumstances and how solid he was otherwise. Look for Owen Milward to turn some heads between the pipes for Janesville this year and possibly make his way onto the NHL Central Scouting watch list. Grade: A-
T1EHL U16 Showcase, September 2018: Millward is a big, rangy goaltender who takes up a lot of real estate in the crease. He is also aggressive in challenging shooters so that combination doesn’t leave many places to put the puck. He’s also very athletic and has very good foot work. We will be keeping our eyes on him this season. Grade: B
