QMJHL: Charlottetown Islanders at Cape Breton Eagles

October 10, 2020 – This was the second of back-to-back games between these teams, both played in the Eagles’ home rink in Sydney, NS. One night earlier, Charlottetown beat Cape Breton 5-2. However, in this game, the Eagles bounced back with a 6-2 win.

Oscar PlandowskiSelects Academy U15T1EHL U15RD6’0″190Charlottetown Islanders | 2019Halifax, NS20032020-2021: B-

Plandowski is a right-hand shooting defenseman who showed good mobility, nice use of his size, and a quality first pass out of the defensive zone throughout the game. He wasn’t flashy, but consistently beat defenders to the puck, and make quick, accurate passes to clear his zone. He moved the puck well on the PP, making smart passes to open forwards in the slot and along the wall. Charlottetown gave up six goals in this game, but Plandowski finished the night even (+/-), with one assist and two hits. Rating: B+

Elliott showed an ability to get open in the offensive zone in this game. On multiple occasions, he shed a defender who appeared to have him contained and got open for a scoring chance. He also used a quick release to get a couple of shots on net. However, he wasn’t as effective in the defensive and neutral zones, making little impact in those areas. Rating: C+

Jacob GoobieHalifax McDonaldsNSMMHLLG5’10”168Charlottetown IslandersHalifax, NS2003Not yet rated

This wasn’t a night to remember for the Eagles’ goaltender. He gave up six goals on just 22 shots. He showed good mobility at times, sliding across the crease quickly to get in position for a shot. However, he also lost track of the puck multiple times when Cape Breton was pressing. On two of these occasions, the Eagles had easy tap-in goals before he was able to locate the puck. Rating: C

Cape Breton draft eligible players

Jeremy LangloisSt-Francois BlizzardQMAAALD6’0″170Cape Breton EaglesSte-Brigitte-de-Laval, QC20032021-2022: B+

Langlois (2022 Draft Eligible) used his strong skating to clear the puck out of the Eagles’ end of the rink, outskating opposing forwards and d-men to move the puck out of trouble. He also pushed the play offensively by skating the puck through the neutral zone and into the Islanders’ zone, allowing the Eagles to set up offensively. However, a knock on him in this game was some indecisiveness in the defensive end when the puck was on his stick. On a few of occasions in the first period Langlois failed to move the puck quickly to his wingers. The result was his late passes getting picked off by Charlottetown, or with Langlois getting overwhelmed by opposing forwards and turning the puck over. Quicker decision making would have produced clean zone exits, instead of prolonged pressure by the Islanders. Rating: C+

Trenholm played with speed and smarts. In the second period, he quickly closed on a Charlottetown puck carrier in the neutral zone to force a turnover, before carrying the puck into the offensive zone and setting up a scoring chance. He played in all situations, including PP and PK, and finished the game with one assist and a +3 rating. Rating: B+

In the third period, Cooper picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and used his speed to race past two Charlottetown defensemen and go in on a breakaway. Overall, he looked better in this game than in others I’ve seen him play. Rating: C+
