QMJHL: Gatineau at Quebec

Played on March 8, 2024

Louis-Antoine Denault (G, L, 6’7″, 192, Quebec Remparts, 09/26/2006)

Game Grade: A

Denault is a massive 6’7″ left catching goalie with a forward leaning stance. He is still developing the fluidity to his inside edge thrust but he showed good strength through incidental contact. The goal against came on the penalty kill from a low percentage low angle wrist shot that banked off his hip on the short side. Denault faced two 2 on 1s plus a 2 on 0 and he did not give up a goal on any of them.

Brady Austin (D, R, 6’2″, 176, Quebec Remparts, 04/19/2006)

Did not play. Austin is a 6’2″ right shot defenseman who was recently call up from the Gatineau Flames.

Alexandre Desmarais (D, L, 6’0″, 172, Quebec Remparts, 03/30/2006)

Game Grade: A-

Desmarais is a below average sized left shot defenseman with a smooth pivot who relied on establishing his ice early to be an effective defender. He is not a threat to put anyone through the boards but he is strong enough to pin his man to end the cycle and he through a beautiful hip check with 6:50 remaining in the second period. Offensively he was most effective when he kept things simple and went with his first choice.

Bruno Jalasti (D, R, 6’0″, 175, Quebec Remparts, 03/24/2006)

Game Grade: C

Jalasti is a below average sized right shot defender with good core strength and balance. His overall offensive game is still developing and has not yet translated to the QMJHL but he is an accurate passer and a defenseman who can find passing lanes to the low forward from the offensive blueline. Defensively he initiates contact and then separates his man from the puck by driving them into the wall.

PierEtienne Cloutier (LW, L, 6’5″, 198, Quebec Remparts, 11/25/2005)

Game Grade: B-

Cloutier is a long rangy left shot left wing. His athleticism was immediately noticed on his first shift as he caught an errant pass with his left hand, softly placed the puck down onto his forehand and then showed an excellent burst of speed to cut diagonally through the neutral zone on a zone entry that established a cycle and early momentum for Quebec. We also liked on other races for loose pucks that Cloutier would use his body to skate through his opponent’s ice on his way to the puck. Standing at 6’5″ this is a skill that will be required for him to have success at higher levels.

Antoine Dorion (C, R, 6’1″, 190, Quebec Remparts, 11/02/2005)

Game Grade: B-

Dorion is a slightly below average sized right shot center. He played a high compete game and was in constant motion. During wall battles he did not allow himself to get trapped on the wrong side of the puck and we liked how he jumped off contact to beat his man into the open ice. Defensively he stopped on pucks while looking over his shoulders to scan the ice for his man. Offensively he had two shots blocked because he stickhandled the puck before shooting which telegraphed his intentions. Dorion played a hard diligent two-way game.

Loic Goyette (C, L, 6’1″, 194, Quebec Remparts, 10/29/2005)

Game Grade: B-

Goyette is a slightly below average sized left shot left wing. He showed a deep knee’d skating base with fluid strides. Although he has above average top speed he is still developing his single stride explosiveness and quick bursts out of hard stops. Goyette finished with three shots on net. The first two he used his speed to beat the defender wide and then attempted to wrap the puck after going behind the net. On the third shot we feel he had an opportunity to one-time a bouncing rolling puck but chose not to. Instead he calmly settled the puck and then attacked the crease while making a hard backhand fake in an attempt to open the goaltender’s legs to go five-hole. In general Goyette showed soft hands and puck poise while looking to make plays.

Xavier Lebel (RW, R, 5’10”, 163, Quebec Remparts, 03/25/2007)

Game Grade: B

Lebel is an undersized right shot right wing with a forward leaning skating posture and good straight line speed. As a 2007 he is still gaining strength and power but he stopped hard and bounced out of his inside edge with quickness. He scored a goal on a quick stick rebound from the top of the slot but the entire play occurred ten seconds earlier when he won a wall battle to extend offensive zone puck possession. During the game Lebel had a two quick stick rebound opportunities from the top of the crease by simply beating his man to the valuable ice and digging his inside edges in. Offensively he forced a few passes into tight areas because he telegraphed his intentions.

Raphael Messier (LW, L, 5’10”, 156, Quebec Remparts, 01/03/2007)

Game Grade: C

Messier is an undersized left shot forward who showed an inside edge skating base with with three quarter length strides that finished with a heel kick. As a 2007 he is still gaining strength and explosiveness. He had one high quality scoring chance that he unfortunately fired wide but on the play we liked how handled the pass cleanly and fired the puck without needing to stickhandle.

Nathan Plouffe (LW, L, 6’2″, 199, Quebec Remparts, 02/28/2006)

Game Grade: C

Plouffe is a long left shot left wing with an uptight skating posture and quick strides that almost push directly behind him. Rarely in a shift do you see him not in motion. By our records he appears to have grown about 1.5″ this year and gained 12 pounds so there is a good chance that he looks like different player during the 24/25 season.

Nathan Quinn (C, R, 5’10”, 165, Quebec Remparts, 08/29/2007)

Game Grade: C+

At this point the 2007 born Quinn is an undersized right shot center with long fluid powerful strides. As the center he showed nice attention to details when providing close support to his defensemen while in low coverage. He maintained net side positioning through contact and we liked how he kept his stick on the ice throughout the battle. In the offensive zone Quinn had the mindset to get the puck to the net as quickly as possible. We love that he is low risk but we think as he gains experience in the QMJHL he will begin to make more plays.

Mavrick Rousseau-Hamel (LW, L, 5’11”, 170, Quebec Remparts, 02/24/2006)

Game Grade: C+

Rousseau-Hamel is an undersized left shot forward who was used primarily right wing. He played an annoying abrasive style and we mean that as a compliment as he was constantly running into opponents and spending as much time as possible standing at the top of the crease. He earned six penalty minutes through an inadvertent high stick and later in the game a roughing penalty while wrestling with and throwing his opponent to the ice in front of their net. Again a nice annoying effective style.
