QMJHL: Halifax Mooseheads Draft Prospects

Jordan DumaisHalifax MooseheadsQMJHLRRW5’9″165Halifax Mooseheads | 2020L’Île-Bizard, QC20042021-2022: C+

Dumais is a slightly below average height right wing with a slightly stocky build. He confidently plays in traffic and believes his body control is so strong that he can withstand body contact and still make plays while defenders are hanging on him. He has excellent lateral quickness, both with and without the puck, and Dumais can spin in tight circles to lose defenders when they take runs at him. In transition, he may not be a rocket, but he can be at top speeds from a standstill in one powerful stride so he is deadly after a grey area turnover. Dumais has a smooth and easy first touch. He handles poor passes easily and can direct them from his feet to his stick blade while his eyes are up looking to make the next play. He has the uncanny ability to suck multiple defenders out of coverage to create passing lanes that would not normally exist. Dumais’ backhand passing skills are excellent. Offensively he is always around the puck looking to create and so far this season he has been creating. Defensive accountability is where NHL teams will be watching him closely. Can he be disciplined and detailed enough to be where he’s supposed to be without the puck? Effort will not be questioned, but Dumais has the track record of being a cheater to the offensive side of the puck so NHL scouts will be watching him closely.

Markus VidicekHalifax MooseheadsQMJHLLC5’10”154Halifax Mooseheads | 2020Kirkland, QC20042021-2022: C

Vidicek is a hard working honest 200′ two-way center. In the defensive zone his head is always on a swivel scanning for an open opponent or exposed passing lane. He maintains net side positioning during wall battles which consistently allows him to beat his man up the ice for transition or to beat his man to the slot area. He has a very quick stick and seems to have a knack for picking off passes or sweep checking the puck off an opponent’s stick. Offensively he easily changes pace through the neutral zone allowing him to manipulate the gap into his favor. He may be light, but he is strong on his skates and routinely out muscles larger opponents and wins battles. As a 2004 he is wearing an “A” for Halifax and it is easy to see his peers respect him.

Jake FurlongHalifax MooseheadsQMJHLLD6’1″190Halifax Mooseheads | 2020Upper Tantallon, NS20042021-2022: C+

Furlong is a solid two-way defenseman who keeps improving with every viewing. Although he appears to be very strong and physically confident right right now, we feel his skating posture will allow him to still be athletic and carry 15-20 more pounds. Defensively he shows the lateral foot work and awareness to pinch off line rushes early in the neutral zone without exposing the dangerous ice. We like his ability to clear shooting lanes without getting tied up and when things breakdown Furlong is more than willing to get big low to eat the puck. Offensively he keeps it simple and stays away from trying to beat guys one on one. He moves the puck quickly, but does have the puck poise to move laterally to generate passing lanes. He walks the offensive blueline with confidence looking for clear lanes, deflections or high tips and when he does have space to let one fly his slapper is a rocket.

James SwanHalifax MooseheadsQMJHLLC5’8″183Halifax Mooseheads | 2020Saint-Laurent, QC20042021-2022: C

Swan is a tank with extremely quick feet and agile edgework who expects to score goals. He buzzes the net, shoots everything and we like that he makes the goalie move or make a save. Physically he is strong as a bull with a pit bull mentality and will outwork any opponent. In his mind the play is never dead and he will be looking to create scoring chances no matter what the situation.

Brady SchultzHalifax MooseheadsQMJHLLD5’10”179Halifax Mooseheads | 2021Monroe, CT2021-2022: C

Schultz is currently in his rookie year with Halifax, yet has adjusted pretty quickly to the pace and QMJHL style of play. Defensively he recognizes mismatches in speed very well and does a good job of holding his ice when a strong middle drive is trying to carry him to the net. In transition his one-touch passes arrive to his target on time and are easy to handle. He supports his partner well by working to provide an easy back diagonal passing option and he certainly understands how to generate breakouts from below his goal line. Schultz is a player currently not on Central Scouting’s list, but we feel his steady calming nature will keep NHL eyes on him all winter.
