QMJHL: Quinn Kennedy

Quinn Kennedy (C, L, 5’10”, 171, Halifax Mooseheads, 02/06/2006)

Quinn Kennedy is a cerebral, competitive, two-way forward who blends high-end hockey sense with a versatile offensive toolkit. After starting the 2024–25 season with Rimouski in a depth role, he earned a larger opportunity with Halifax and produced at a point-per-game pace. He’s a possession-style player who plays with tempo and is trusted in all situations. Kennedy doesn’t stand out with pure speed or elite skill, but he consistently drives play through anticipation, spatial awareness, and a sharp mind for the game.

Reasons to Draft:
Elite Hockey IQ: Kennedy excels at reading the play, identifying defensive gaps, and adapting to teammates. He controls pace in possession and makes consistent reads under pressure. His anticipation without the puck is a defining strength, especially in offensive support and forechecking scenarios.

Reliable in All Situations: He was trusted in both special teams roles, averaging nearly 3:00 of PP time and in a limited PK work. Despite his size, his ability to stay above the puck and win pucks back through second effort gave coaches confidence to play him in any situation.

Multi-Faceted Offensive Game: Kennedy blends playmaking and shooting effectively. He can drive the middle lane to create space, distribute off the cycle, or finish with a quick release. He registered 47 points in 62 games despite a midseason team changes and inconsistent linemates.

High Compete Level: He plays with edge and urgency. Though not physically dominant, Kennedy’s willingness to initiate contact, pressure defenders, and engage in battles gives his game a scrappy element that coaches value. His 0.56 penalties drawn per game is evidence of his effectiveness at forcing mistakes.

Strong Development Arc: Kennedy made a clear jump after his move to Halifax. With an expanded role and better offensive opportunities, his production, possession metrics, and puck touch volume all improved. He doubled his point-per-game rate while maintaining defensive responsibility.

Reasons for Concern:
Limited Physical Tools: At 5’10”, 171 lbs, Kennedy is undersized and will need to continue developing strength to hold up at higher levels. He wins battles through angles and timing but sits below 50% in puck battle win rate. That number must climb to project him as an NHL center.

Defensive Metrics Lagging: Despite sound positioning, his -24 plus/minus rating in Halifax is a concern. While partially reflective of team context, there are moments where his defensive urgency drops, particularly in extended shifts. His compete is consistent shift-to-shift, but not always high-end in his own end.

Skating Pace vs. High-End Defenders: Kennedy is a fluid and agile skater with good edgework, but his top gear isn’t elite. Against defenders who can close space quickly, he needs to rely on deception and decision-making more than separation speed. He’ll need to continue refining his explosiveness and stride mechanics.

Projection:
Kennedy projects as a forward who can drive a line with pace, intelligence, and two-way responsibility. If he continues to produce at 5-on-5 and round out his defensive zone play, his ability to play center or wing gives him added versatility in an NHL depth chart.

Draft Recommendation:
7th Round Pick

Kennedy’s cerebral style, scoring touch, and playmaking ability make him a safe projection as a pro. While he may not have elite tools, his decision-making, edge, and ability to mesh with different linemates will appeal to teams looking for reliable contributors beyond the top-six. Continued physical growth and defensive refinement will determine if he can carve out a full-time NHL role.
