Samuel Hrenak

Samuel Hrenak (G, L, 6’3″, 183, Fargo Force, 05/19/2008) Samuel Hrenak is a 6’3′, 183-pound left-catching goaltender who has NHL size and shows intriguing upside tied to his athleticism and ability to perform in higher-end environments, but whose overall body of work this season reflects inconsistency and a wide performance range that makes him a longer-term projection. His USHL numbers (2.20 GAA, .918 SV% in 9 games) and international play (1.32 GAA, .956 SV% in 6 games) are strong indicators that he can elevate his game against better competition, showing composure, tracking ability, and the athleticism to make second saves when he is dialed in. These performances show legitimate NHL tools, particularly his ability to manage pace and stay competitive in structured environments. However, his results across Slovakian leagues (5.51 GAA, .888 SV% at the pro level; ~3.00 GAA, .907-.918 in junior) highlight significant inconsistency, especially when facing sustained pressure (35 shots against per game, 89% save rate), as he had issues with rebound control, game-to-game stability, and handling defensive breakdowns. His frame, while tall and long, still lacks strength at 183 pounds, which shows up in his ability to hold edges through contact, and control second opportunities, particularly in tight traffic. His puck play is a positive, showing confidence and an ability to move pucks efficiently to his defensemen and hit the long guy during second period line changes, but it is not yet a differentiating strength. Overall, Hrenak’s is a goaltender with clear NHL traits in his size, athleticism, and flashes of high-end performance, but with inconsistency and physical development still limiting his reliability; I do believe he has a path to becoming an NHL goaltender, but it will take time, and he should be viewed as a longer-term development pick whose success will depend on improving strength, rebound control, and consistency.
