Sebastian Charvat

Sebastian Charvat (G, L, 6’5″, 177, Waterloo Black Hawks, 01/31/2008) Sebastian Charvat is a 6’5′, 177-pound left-catching goaltender with NHL size and clear long-term upside, but his current statistical profile (37 GP, 3.40 GAA, .906 SV%, .820 SV% on Grade ‘A’ chances) and underlying performance show a raw, development-dependent prospect rather than a near-term NHL projection. His size is a major asset as he naturally takes away net and can be difficult to beat cleanly when set and square to the shooter, and he handles a high workload (32 shots against per game) with a stable baseline save percentage, indicating he can manage volume without becoming fatigued. His puck play on dump-ins or hard rings is functional (87% pass completion), and there are flashes of composure and tracking ability that support my belief in his upside. However, my concerns are significant and consistent. His .820 save percentage on Grade ‘A’ chances is well below NHL projection standards, highlighting difficulty in high-danger situations because he is prone to sitting back in his crease, particularly on odd-man rushes. His movement lacks explosiveness and efficiency, which is compounded by his lean frame; at 177 pounds, he struggles to consistently control rebounds or own the ice, at the top of the crease often leaving pucks withing a few feet of the weakside post and opening holes under his arms when transitioning. His goals against (3.3 per game) relative to expected goal metrics indicates he is allowing more than he should, reinforcing that his technical game and positioning are weaknesses. While his size gives him a margin for error, he currently relies too heavily on blocking rather than controlled, repeatable mechanics, and his lack of strength limits his ability to hold body positioning in traffic. Overall, Charvat has legitimate upside tied to his frame and foundational traits, and I feel his projection is heavily dependent on off-ice development, specifically adding strength, explosiveness, and coordination, but at this stage I would consider him as a fifth-round project with the understanding that his development path will be extended, but could be outstanding.
