Simon Katolicky (RW, L, 6’4″, 194, Tappara U20, 06/24/2008) Simon Katolicky is a 6’4′, 194 lb left-shot winger with a pro frame and clear identity to build on, but his current production show a player whose tools have not yet translated into consistent offensive impact, making him more of a long-term projection. He is an effective straight-line skater for his size with the ability to close quickly on defenders, disrupt plays, and create pressure on the forecheck, and his defensive habits remain a positive (57% faceoff rate in limited reps, responsible off-puck defensive coverage, willingness to track back). However, his offensive output (6-11-17 in 29 U20 games, -6) is underwhelming relative to his physical advantages. He generates some volume (4.0 shot attempts/game), he creates 1.5 grade ‘A’ chances/game, but converts at just 8%, showing a clear need to improve his first touch, release and one-timer. His puck management remains a concern (5.3 giveaways/game). He has raw puck skills, but shows difficulty processing and executing under pressure, and his 43% puck battle win rate is particularly concerning for a player of his size and supposed identity as a power forward. Despite his frame, he is not consistently imposing physically (0.63 hits/game), and there are stretches where he plays more perimeter than a North American professional coach will stand for. The positive is that his skating base, reach, and defensive detail give him a foundation to build on, and he does show flashes of being able to drive wide, get inside, and create disruption, but those flashes are not yet consistent or efficient enough to project NHL value. Ultimately, Katolicky is a developmental prospect whose NHL path will depend heavily on improving first touch, puck placement, becoming more assertive, and learning to consistently win battles and finish plays; if those areas come together over the next 4 years, he could develop into a middle-six NHL winger who forechecks, changes momentum, and provides secondary offense, but as it stands, I have him as a mid-second round draft consideration with risk tied to his current lack of offensive consistency and physical dominance.
