Spencer Gill

Spencer Gill (D, R, 6’4″, 185, Rimouski Oceanic, 08/17/2006)

2024 NHL Draft Grade: B

Scouting Report:

Gill is a 6’4″, 190 pound right shot defenseman who is still improving his footspeed but at this level Gill compensates with game awareness and power, both of which have noticeably improved over the course of the season so we expect his quickness and first step to improve as he continues to mature. Overall his ability to read the game and execute plays under pressure sets him apart from his peers, making him a formidable presence on the ice and a defender NHL organizations pay attention to.

Over the course of the season, Gill demonstrated his versatility as a transitional defender, engaging in puck battles with strength and urgency across all three zones. His decision-making, both on and off the puck, reflects a high level of tactical awareness, enabling him to find open teammates and contribute to offensive opportunities.

Spencer Gill’s performance at the CHL Top Prospects event was impressive, especially considering the added pressure of playing in front of his hometown crowd. Despite the scrutiny and high expectations, Gill rose to the occasion, showcasing a level of poise and skill reminiscent of his highly-regarded older brother, Dyllan Gill.

Another area of improvement for Gill lies in his upper body strength. As an August 2006 his is young for his draft class so we have no doubt that he will continue to mature but high level commitment in the weight room will enhance his ability to physically compete against opposing forwards in defensive situations in professional hockey. However, his 6’4″ frame suggests potential for growth and development, offering promise for future seasons.

Overall, Spencer Gill is a defensive prospect with immense potential who we have graded as a “B”. As he continues to refine his skills, train and adapt to the demands of the professional game, Gill has the makings of a valuable asset for any NHL team.
