Sullivan Mack – Long Term Watch

Neutral Zone NHL’s Ian Moran’s comments: Sullivan was a monster this past year in New England prep hockey. He was a beast who physically dominated just about everyone on the ice. It was kind of foolish because when he lowered his shoulder I honestly don’t think there was a defender in prep hockey who could contain him. None of the physical stuff surprised me, or probably anyone who had seen him play before. But this is where I was a little surprised and why I think Sullivan is a player to keep an eye on. Things slowed down for him. He still flew around and used his explosiveness to expose guys, but it looked like his vision slowed down and his poise picked up. He showed the the skating and edge work to drive hard wide, yet still be able to find the second or sometimes even third layer of the attack. He settled poor passes much more quickly and confidently which allowed him to play with his head up to make skill touch plays. And not to mention, he scored 44 goals in 34 games. I don’t care where you’re playing because that is impressive. As a 2000 playing New England prep hockey I don’t think he’ll get drafted, but over the next few years I do think NHL organizations are going to be watching him closely though. He received excellent coaching at Kimball Union from former NCAA coach Tim Whitehead and he’ll play collegiality for Cornell, so when it’s time for Sullivan to turn pro he will be used to the style of play that will be asked of him.

Merrimack College Prep School Cup, January 2020: Sullivan was ranked #20.

Flood Marr Tournament, January 2019: The Alaska native had a nice rookie season last year and helped the Wildcats get their New England Championship but he’s taken his game to another level and is a top-six forward this year. He’s got speed, he can fly down the walls on zone entries, make a quick move around a defender and get to the goal. He has a quick, powerful release and is able to make moves and toe-drag at full speed. He has a potent wrist shot, he can skate through checks and take hits despite his size and showed a nifty, slick stick in small areas, particularly in the corners. He can be an energy, F1 forechecker or penalty killer or he can be a quick, skilled, elusive forward. Grade: B

New England Fall Prep League, November 2018: Sullivan got his feet wet last year in prep hockey putting together a respectable season but this year should be his opportunity to really grow. He played a well-rounded offensive game in the action we watched. He activates well going from a standstill to kicking into gear in just a couple of strides. He sees the ice well and has a nice catch-and-shoot ability which allows him to play the puck quickly and put quality shots on net as a result. He scored a couple of goals here including a wrister that he placed top shelf. Still has upside to tap into butt he will test those limits this season. Grade: B+
