USHL: Dubuque at Lincoln

Game played on 11/01/2024.

Jan Spunar (G, L, 6’3″, 185, Dubuque Fighting Saints, 05/30/2004)

Grade: A

Comments: The Czechian born goaltender plays a calm and composed game, using his larger frame to his advantage. A strong set of fundamentals and composure, setting his feet and centering his body on pucks. This combination allows for controlling rebounds with ease away from second chance opportunity areas. After having a lapse in the third period and giving up a soft goal from the point with no traffic, he composed himself well and finished off the game spotless. His post play is controlled sealing holes as well as the ice however his use of an overlap created awkward movement and a reverse was more effective. Scans of the ice and backside looks aid in staying ahead of plays and stay centered on threats. Remaining in a mid-depth Spunar effectively uses active hands and odd parts of his body to fight off pucks and remain composed. A good performance in this contest and helping Dubuque secure two points in a battle of the top two teams in the league.

Yan Shostak (G, L, 6’0″, 185, Lincoln Stars, 03/30/2004, St. Cloud)

Grade: A-

Comments: The 2004 born Lincoln goaltender bases his game behind powerful and condensed movement, gaining depth and reducing angles. Moving with power but lacking some precision gets himself outside the crease causing sprawling. Shostak shows a lot of poise and confidence in his abilities and a confident netminder for the Stars to play in front of. Smooth transitions in and out of his posts, as well as sealing the ice and closing holes well when pucks are behind the net or on awkward angles. Controlling rebounds effectively when setting his feet, but not as effective when in still in motion. Frequent visible scans, tracking pucks effectively, and identifying threats allow Shostak to read the game well and stay ahead of plays. Regaining of the backside leg keeps him mobile and a big part of his success and strong movement. A good performance giving the Stars a chance to win but coming up just short.
