Comments: At 5’11’ tall the Quebec native plays a balanced game featuring athleticism combined with sound mechanics which is necessary for his size. His movement is powerful and precise, but his back leg tends to not regain causing his knees to widen, something to watch for moving forward. Keeping an upright chest and comfortable around his posts creates more size to his frame. His puck tracking and scans are effective at reading plays and staying ahead of them, as well as retaining and directing pucks to control play. A great start to his year in this contest surrendering a lone goal on thirty-four shots.
Waylon Esche (G, L, 6’2″, 208, Sioux Falls Stampede, 03/29/2005)
Game Rating
B
Esche’s athleticism and size allow him to effectively use his body positioning to make saves, particularly with powerful movement that enables him to stay mobile on the ice. His ability to track pucks is a standout skill, allowing him to center his body square to make saves and minimize secondary movement. However, he can struggle with controlling rebounds and maintaining mobility when pucks are lost in screens, which may lead to second chance opportunities. He demonstrates strong tracking abilities through frequent scans and visually noticeable head movements. While his powerful athletic movement is effective, it sometimes lacks precision, causing additional movement. Overall, this goaltender shows good qualities and solid movement, but could benefit from more control over rebounds and pucks in screens.

Comments: The 2005 birth year Esche uses his size effectively, relying on his athletic and powerful movement to read and stay ahead of plays. With a wide stance his butterfly is wide but widens his knees limiting his movement. Positioning himself and keeping his center line on pucks is where he finds success. An ability to drop into pucks and read them aids in his center line adjustments. Although this is a positive, without control, he can find himself outside of his crease or sprawling as a couple times in this contest cost him and the Stampede. With a solid foundation but some things to focus on moving forward a tough loss to start the season.
