Yan Shostak (G, L, 6’0″, 185, Lincoln Stars, 03/30/2004, St. Cloud)
Game Rating
B+
Yan Shostak, a 2004-born goaltender, demonstrates a solid foundation of fundamental skills that allow him to control pucks effectively. He has powerful movement and stays ahead of plays, but can sometimes leave his feet, reducing mobility. However, he creates a nice seal when doing so. Shostak’s ability to gain depth and reduce angles is an elite skill for a smaller goaltender, and he controls rebounds effectively, helping control the pace of play. He also excels with precise movement in and out of his posts, staying comfortable and mobile in various situations. His ability to track pucks and identify threats allows him to read the game well. While Shostak can be aggressive at times, he often recovers well to minimize damage. Overall, he showcases a strong skillset that will serve as a solid foundation for future growth.

Comments: Shostak a 2004 born goaltender for the Stars showcases athletic and powerful movement paired with knowledge of the game and a solid tracking ability to set himself up for success. Fundamentally sound the St. Cloud State commit only finds himself in trouble when he starts to scramble and sprawl getting outside of his crease. His movement is athletic and powerful able to beat plays on his feet with a solid read. His stance including his hands stay condensed creating the power and mobility. Capable of shifting into pucks and making minor angle adjustments he does a great job of keeping his center line square and aligned with opportunities. Taking frequent scans and an active head shows a strong ability to track pucks and read plays enabling his movement and more aggressive depth at times. Strong rebound control and an active stick helps keep puck close to be smothered or directed to low traffic areas. A solid game just a slight let down in the third period mostly getting beaten on larger cross crease movements when he gets spread out stopping 21 of 25 in the contest. Grade: B+
Samuel Urban (G, L, 6’0″, 210, Sioux City Musketeers, 05/01/2005, Arizona State)
Game Rating
A-
Samuel Urban is a technically sound goaltender with a condensed stance, balanced weight, and upright chest that enables fluid movement in the crease. He sets his feet well on threats, allowing him to scan the zone effectively and control rebounds. Urban’s balance allows him to actively use his arms, shoulders, and legs to manage rebounds, although their effectiveness was inconsistent in this report. He fills space by using reverse angles and moves north-south effectively, which helped the Musketeers secure a 4-3 win despite allowing 24 shots.

Comments: The Arizona State commit relies on a strong set of fundamentals and a balanced composed game to create a calm composure. After giving up three in the first period of this contest the Slovakian native did a great job to regain his composure and settle in for the next 40 minutes keeping the Stars off the score sheet. A well-balanced stance and an upright chest keep him mobile and allows for fluid movement. Gaining depth appropriately and staying upright makes him play larger than his just over 6′ frame. A widening stance at times setting his feet affects his mobility and renders him stuck in quicksand having to regain or struggle with larger movements lacking power. Taking some shoulder checks and scans allow him to read plays but could be more frequent especially when pucks are not in dangerous areas. Staying inside his crease eliminates any sprawling and keeps his calm demeanor. Comfortable in his posts and using a reverse most times he has a wide butterfly sealing the ice nicely and eliminating holes through the lower part of the net. A solid performance after a rocky start stopping 40 of 43 in the road victory. Grade: A-
