Vilho Vanhatalo

Vilho Vanhatalo (RW, L, 6’3″, 189, Tappara, 01/18/2008) Vilho Vanhatalo is a 6’3′, 189 lb left-shot winger who brings an appealing blend of size, straight-line skating, and competitive intent, but he is currently developing puck management details and habits that translate to higher levels of play. At the U20 level (10-9-19 in 38 games), his production is modest relative to his size and strength, though his international play (10 points in 14 U18 games) shows flashes of offensive upside when he is assertive and playing downhill. His game is built around volume and pressure, middle-lane drive, forechecking pressure, and ability to create chaos around the crease. He can show the traits of a power forward: he competes in all three zones, contributes on both special teams (2:25 PPT, 1:32 SHT), and plays with pace and intent, while his physical engagement and willingness to get inside ice remain positives. However, the efficiency and decision-making remain concerns. His 8% scoring chance conversion is low for a player generating that type of volume, and his 79% pass completion with 4.5 giveaways/game are consistent with his inconsistent puck management. Despite his size, his 47% puck battle win rate is underwhelming and he is not yet consistently winning the hard areas that his game is to be built on. There is also a lack of offensive polish. He can generate chances through effort and directness, but he does not consistently show the playmaking poise or finishing touch to separate himself as a top-six projection, and his limited production in Liiga action (1 assist in 8 games) reinforces the gap between his tools and his current level of effectiveness. Ultimately, Vanhatalo has NHL traits with his size, skating, compete, and a power-forward mentality, but he is still raw in terms of execution, details and consistency. He projects as a middle-six NHL winger who can forecheck, kill penalties, and provide secondary offense, but without those improvements he risks plateauing as a European pro.
