Comments: Landon makes himself noticed in all areas of the ice. Landon did a lot of things well tonight but was highly efficient on Everett’s powerplay. Even though they did not score (0-2), Landon always seemed to make the correct play. Working the flank on the right side, Landon would get his feet above the blue line and receive the puck moving down hill towards the net. This gave Landon options. Shoot or cross seam passes to his back door teammates. There was no doubt that Wenatchee made sure to finish every hit they could on Landon. Landon would widen his base, accept the hit, and brush them off, saving his energy. Landon was a force across their defensive blue line. Trusting his feet and having an active stick, allowed Landon to create multiple turnovers between the blue lines.

Comments: Julius is a man amongst boys in the WHL. His skating is fluid and effortless once he gets to speed. On rushes, Julius skates with his head up, throwing fakes to the inside and quickly moving back outside, easily fooling defenders. With such a larger frame he is able to protect the puck using his body to shield any opportunity for the opponent to get to the inside. Julius with his big size and great skating ability deserves the most praise for his hockey IQ. Both of his goals tonight came from him finding the quiet space inside the slot. His first goal was a tip where he was all alone in front, and the second goal he sneakily went back door without defenders picking him up. To tie this all together in the second period Julius sacrificed the body blocking an important shot while killing a 5v3 penalty.

Zackary Shantz (C, R, 5’10”, 165, Everett Silvertips, 09/09/2005)

Comments: Shantz is off to a hot start in his final junior season. Zackary is the kind of player whose motor never turns off. His speed comes from a low, strong base, where he uses quick strides to close the distance on the forecheck. To open up the second period, Zackary causes three different turnovers in the same shift, never allowing Wenatchee to exit their defensive zone. Even though this did not lead to a goal, it does define this game in total with Everett’s non-stop skating and forecheck pressure. His goal in the first was one of endless effort by his line. Zackary at one point was pinned against the boards but instead of staying pinned, moved his legs, and got to the net. Luckily for Zackary, his nose for the net led to him putting the puck in a mostly empty cage. The 20 year old proves that you cannot teach hard work or relentlessness.

Tarin Smith (D, L, 6’1″, 201, Everett Silvertips, 03/24/2006)

Comments: Tarin showed a smart veteran presence tonight against Wenatchee. Tarin is a shifty defenseman who closes gaps and passing lanes quickly. Tarin’s ability to read the play and put himself in optimal positions, allowed his game tonight to look rather effortless. A majority of the breakouts that Tarin led, he held onto the puck until the Wenatchee forecheckers were close. With a sharp change of direction he easily slipped accurate passes for his flying forwards. This forced the opposition to be out of position and led to odd man rushes for Everett. Getting the empty net goal, Tarin’s best play of the night came killing a 5v3 penalty. With an active stick and a smart read, Tarin broke up the pass a Wenatchee forward tried to make from behind the goal line to the top of the powerplay. During 5v5 play it would be beneficial for Tarin to work across the blue line more. Sometimes he seemed flat-footed when receiving the puck on the blue line. With his vision and skill it would help create more offensive opportunities for himself being in motion with the puck at the blue line.

Comments: The Czechia defenseman understands his role for the Everett Silvertips and plays it well. Jakub’s vision is the defensive side of the game. Jakub anticipates the play in front of him and puts himself in the best positions defensively. Using an active stick he breaks plays up before they can fully develop and never allows time and space for the opposition. Jakub had multiple big defensive plays tonight, but the best came from breaking up a 2v1 rush in the first period. After breaking up the rush the puck managed on the stick of another Wenatchee player. This is where he sacrificed his body stopping another wave of Wenatchee offense, making his goalies job that much easier. With Everett’s offensive defenseman, Jakub compliments this lineup well with his showdown defensive style game.

Matias Vanhanen (RW, L, 5’11”, 175, Everett Silvertips, 09/11/2007)

Comments: The Finnish forward in his first season in the WHL is showcasing why he is considered a high IQ playmaker. His speed was no match for Wenatchee’s players tonight. Matias is not only fast North to South but very quick in the corners. Matias has quick lateral movements and strong edge control where he can turn on a dime and escape pressure. On the forecheck he was right on top of Wenatchee’s defenseman creating turnovers or bad puck management decisions. On one of Vanhanen’s assists tonight, he beat Wenatchee’s defenseman behind their own net with pure desire for the puck. As he walked out in front he found his Finnish teammate all alone at the back door. Without Matias speed and determination, to win this puck race, this play would never have developed.

Brek Liske (D, R, 6’1″, 190, Everett Silvertips, 01/09/2008)

Comments: Liske played a solid game tonight and did not shy away from Wenatchee’s hitting nature. Liske wins his battles using his body and strength to overpower smaller opponents. On breakouts, Brek gets his feet moving and can lead the breakout but does not force it. If he is under pressure he makes quick accurate passes to his forwards. Brek quarterbacked the second powerplay tonight and showcased his patience and vision through smart decisions at the right time. The most notable play from Brek tonight, was a reverse hit he gave from an over zealous winger inside the offensive blue line. This showcased his understanding of the pressure he was receiving and he did not shy away, rather made them pay for trying to hit him.

Comments: The 10th overall Wenatchee import draft pick did not disappoint in his opening start against Everett Silvertips. Even though Tobias did not get the win, he did stop 37 of 40 shots. At 6’4” Tobias is a very large and active goalie. Tobias made multiple scrambling saves, due to his long limbs and overall aggressiveness in the crease. On zone entry shots, Tobias deflected pucks well away from high danger areas, rather strategically placing the puck for his teammates to recover. It is really hard to get a good net front screen on Tobais which allows him to stay calm and not overcommit. Side to side Tobias moves well and can athletically push across his crease with ease. It is safe to say none of the goals tonight were Tobias getting beat cleanly. There is no doubt Tobias will steal some games for the Wenatchee Wild this season.

Josh Fluker (D, R, 6’1″, 189, Wenatchee Wild, 01/03/2006)

Comments: Josh was noticeable early for the Wenatchee Wild. Defensively, Josh made it hard for Everett to enter the zone. His ability to ride his edges across his defensive blue line while using an active stick to break up Everett’s offense was excellent. On breakouts, Josh got his feet up ice and made quick intelligent passes to his streaking forwards. Josh’s assist came from a neutral zone retrieval where he pushed the pace back into Everett’s zone, beating the first man just outside the offensive blue line. Afterwards, he made a nice five-foot pass under a defending Everett’s player stick where his teammate made a following pass for a quick shot in the slot. Without Josh’s offensive sense to push this play quickly, this play would not have developed. It was very apparent when Josh did not return for the 3rd period of play for the Wenatchee Wild.

Paul Wiczek (RW, R, 6’5″, 206, Wenatchee Wild, 02/23/2006)

Comments: Paul is a very large and strong forward at 6’4”. He is not easy to move and uses his body well in front of the net. In the second period, he did exactly that when he planted in front, tipping a blue line shot. It was a great hand eye coordination play from Paul which helped to create some momentum for the Wild. Paul also showed some quickness when he caused a turnover on the forecheck. With his big size it was an explosive move the Everett defense was not ready for. Paul used his long reach to cause the turnover. He then handled the puck and fed a nice pass creating a chance for Wenatchee, yet again. Even though it was a tough game for Wenatchee against a strong Everett team, and obviously frustrating for Wenatchee, we would like to see Paul control his emotions a little more late in the game.

Aiden Grossklaus (RW, R, 5’11”, 181, Wenatchee Wild, 02/23/2007, Minnesota State)

Comments: Aiden had the lone goal for Wenatchee tonight. His goal showcased his ability to catch the puck at speed, going backhand to forehand quickly, beating the goalie under the blocker and over his pads. It was a nice goal early in the game. Aiden did well to showcase his speed whenever he had space with the puck. On an early faceoff in the second, Wenatchee lost the faceoff but Aiden stole the puck with nice stick work and led the rush. His first three strides showcased his quick feet when he created separation from everyone in the faceoff circle. Throughout the game Aiden made sure to finish his hits and attack his assignments defensively.

Darian Rolsing (D, R, 6’5″, 186, Wenatchee Wild, 02/14/2008)

Comments: The German defenseman did well in his first WHL game. Listed at 6’6” the young defenseman played a simple honest game for the Wenatchee Wild. At the offensive blue line Darian trusted his long reach and feet, pinching on multiple rimmed pucks. On defensive zone puck retrievals, Darian evaluated the ice, got his feet up ice and made simple smart passes to his forwards. In the third period Darian was not beaten once, holding a tight gap on attacking Everett players. This can be noted as Josh Fluker did not return for the Wenatchee Wild, which led to an increase in playing time for Darian. Showing good stamina and simple intelligent hockey, Darian showcased his ability to be a reliable defenseman for the Wenatchee Wild.

Luka Shcherbyna (C, R, 5’10”, 180, Wenatchee Wild, 06/01/2006, Colgate)

Comments: Luka was a 200 foot center for Wenatchee tonight. Luka showed his will to win with intelligent backchecking, hard hits, and a consistent motor. In the offensive zone, Luka never stopped moving his feet and was always looking to find himself open space. Luka uses his body well to protect the puck while still finding space with his legs to create quality opportunities for Wenatchee. For example, in the second, Luka had a lot of back checking pressure on a zone entry. He did not panic with the puck, rather showed patience protecting the puck from the oncoming pressure. As he continued to skate into the slot he released a quick backhand forehand shot that surprised Everett’s goalie. If Luka can continue to develop his edges and overall skating, this will only enhance his hockey IQ style game.
