WHL: Medicine Hat at Swift Current

Game played on 12/04/2024.

Reid Dyck (G, L, 6’4″, 194, Swift Current Broncos, 01/20/2004)

Grade: A-

Comments: The Bruins’ sixth-round pick from the 2022 NHL Draft returns to the Broncos for his fifth and final season. He is a bigger goaltender who moves well across his crease with his chest up. He is athletic, able to quickly move across his crease to make saves. He was square to shooters and quick to get to his marks to challenge. It is worth noting that Reid struggled to make saves with his glove hand, as he dropped a few catchable pucks, and the second Tigers goal was to the glove side. That being said, the Broncos are currently in a rebuilding year, and Reid consistently faced high-quality chances. Due to his size and athleticism, we are excited to see what level Reid reaches in his career. If he chooses to go the NCAA route rather than pro next season, he would greatly improve the National Championship hopes of whichever program he joins.

Eric Johnston (D, L, 6’0″, 188, Swift Current Broncos, 02/18/2004)

Grade: C+

Comments: Eric is a defensive defenseman who defended the rush well, stepping up to close the gap and knocking pucks away with his stick. He was physical in the corners and overall showed strong effort. We noted that he can continue to improve his passing, as he struggled at times to connect with his target. He can also continue to improve his foot speed, as the Ruck twins (’08s) were able to consistently cycle the puck in his corner and create chances. As it stands, Eric would be a benefit to an NCAA or USports program in need of a physical, defensive defenseman.

Carlin Dezainde (C, L, 5’11”, 174, Swift Current Broncos, 12/29/2004, Connecticut)

Grade: B+

Comments: Carlin joined the Broncos after starting the season with the Prince George Cougars. The UConn commit showcased excellent edges and hands, creating space while cycling the puck down low in the offensive zone. He also displayed great straight-line speed, enabling him to win races up the ice to loose pucks. Carlin made strong passes to his teammates and showed a quick release when shooting. On the defensive side of the puck, he forced turnovers with his speed and physicality. We expect Carlin to have an instant impact with the Huskies next season.
