Hunter Mayo | Red Deer Rebels | WHL | R | D | 6’1″ | 201 | Red Deer Rebels | 2019 | Martensville, SK | 2004 | 2021-2022: C |
Mayo is a tough hard nosed right shot defender. You can call it whatever you want, but he has an ample amount of grit and abrasiveness in his game. Defensively he is looking to make his opponents pay. As soon as he notices a player’s head is down he is intent to go in for the kill shot. There are times he over extends himself by getting outside the dots without having appropriate back pressure (which leads to a successful middle drive), so we will be watching to see if this habit can be coached out of him, but in our opinion it’s easier to pull the rope rather than push it. Offensively he moves the puck quickly and stays within himself. He makes a hard flat pass that is easy to receive. He handles hard passes cleanly and does not try to dangle. Mayo does not need to stickhandle before making a play in transition and his one touch passes hit his forwards in stride. He is a player that we will be watching closely.
Jace Weir | Red Deer Rebels | WHL | R | D | 6’2″ | 185 | Red Deer Rebels | 2019 | Coldstream, BC | 2004 | 2021-2022: C |
Weir is an athletic right shot defenseman with a wide skating base that will allow him to stay mobile as he continues to mature and gain weight. He is currently averaging over 21:00 minutes per game for Red Deer and is used as key player in both of the special team’s game. Defensively Weir establishes his net front ice early and easily clears shooting lanes without getting tied up. He shows good awareness and anticipation and seems to get the jump on opponents when racing for loose pucks. One thing we’ve seen consistently, he has the core strength to battle through contact while making a breakout pass and can hold off a forechecker by lowering his shoulder and keeping his feet moving. In transition he goes with his first decision. Rarely do we see him over complicate things and throw pucks into trouble. Weir walks the offensive blueline with his head up while changing the shooting angle. He has a nice stutter step and is unpredictable as he keeps both options open if he will go left or right to get his shot off. His shot might not be a cannon, but he hits the net and his snap shot is consistently about 16″ in the air. He is very active when jumping up as the second wave or joining the rush to be the extra man in the attack. The righty’s size and straight forward approach will be appealing to NHL teams.
Ben King | Red Deer Rebels | WHL | R | F | 6’3″ | 201 | Red Deer Rebels | 2018 | Vernon, BC | 2002 | 2021-2022: C+ 2019-2020: B- |
When we first felt King was a legit National League prospect it was for the 2020 NHL Draft and we had him rated as a “B-” prospect. He was a lanky 6’1″ and 180lbs. Today we still feel he is a legit prospect, but some things have changed. He is now a defensively responsible 200′ center who has scored 38 goals in his last 85 games or 22 goals in his last 39 games, but the thing that really jumps off the ice at you is that King has physically matured into a 6’3″ 200lbs man. There’s no doubt in our mind that NHL teams will be paying attention to him as the year progresses.
Ben King Scouting report, June 27, 2020
Carter Anderson | Red Deer Rebels | WHL | L | F | 5’10” | 181 | Red Deer Rebels | 2019 | Thompson, MB | 2004 | Not yet rated |
Anderson is a high paced left winger who is not afraid to get involved physically. He is an effective F1 on the forecheck, as he cuts the ice in half taking smart angles with an active stick and he has more than a willingness to finish his checks. We’ve noted many times his willingness to “get big low” so he can block a shot from the point. Although he has shown the ability to score at younger levels right now Anderson is being used as a high energy winger who will throw his body around and cause chaos after the whistle. He has a very deep knee bend with a high stride frequency and we feel with added leg strength development Anderson’s offensive side of the game has a chance to explode later in his junior career.
Jhett Larson | Red Deer Rebels | WHL | L | C | 5’8″ | 170 | Red Deer Rebels | 2019 | Delisle, SK | 2004 | 2021-2022: C |
Larson is a true speed left shot forward. In almost every situation he is flying all over the ice looking for loose pucks or trying to make his opponents make poor decisions because his speed overwhelms them. He has a nice touch around the net and (again) will use his speed and quickness to beat his opponents to loose pucks for scoring opportunities.
Kai Uchacz | Red Deer Rebels | WHL | R | C | 6’1″ | 190 | Seattle Thunderbirds | 2018 | Calgary, AB | 2003 | 2021-2022: C |
Uchacz is a big strong right shot forward. He has poise with the puck and has very nice lateral movement both with or without the puck. He can shoot while his feet are moving and does a nice job of finding the seam so he can use the opposing defenders as a screen. He is a smooth inside edge skater who does not waste movements and has a nice easy glide. One thig of note, on a team that has scored 63 goals and given up 46 goals Uchacz has a plus / minus rating of +13, with the next closest forward being +8 and the lowest forward having a -8 rating. He will need to continue repairing his off-ice image if an NHL team is going to seriously consider drafting him.
