Brooks – Pingree Tournament Day 1 Recap

North Yarmouth vs. Pingree – This game was a slow starter and both teams struggled to maintain a consistent pace. As a result there were few scoring opportunities which led to a scoreless first.

Action picked up in the second and the Driscoll brothers for Pingree dominated: Brendan scored first followed by a shorty by Ian. The momentum was squashed by NYA after three unanswered goals to start the third. First by defender Julian Etauri off a goalie mishandle, then forwards Damon Dulac and Clement Delisle-Blais. But it was that man again who tied it with four minutes to go for Pingree: Brendan Driscoll with an assist from his brother Ian. Final after a five minute OT: 3-3.

Pingree dressed five defensemen so Brendan Driscoll chipped in on the blue line too. They play hard and don’t give you anything easy. NYA looks much improved offensively thanks to an infusion of Québécois seniors. North Yarmouth Academy 3, Pingree 3

1st Star: F Brendan Driscoll (Pingree)
2nd Star: F Ian Driscoll (Pingree)
3rd Star: F Damon Dulac (NYA)

Brooks vs. Berwick – Brooks defeated Berwick 4-2 in their first game of the Brooks-Pingree Tournament. Berwick came out hard netting a goal a minute and a half into the game. The goal was tapped in by Jaxson Roenick from a feed off the pads from Padraic Condon. Brooks answered with 11:02 left in the first with a short handed goal scored on the rush by Jake MacKinnon with a feed from John Fritz. Brooks later capitalized on a power play goal scored by Parker Sondag with 6:08 left in the first assisted by CJ Beals. Berwick came out hard in the second hungry to tie the game but could not capitalize. Both teams traded chances in the second but the period ended scoreless with a big third period ahead. The third started off with a Berwick attack but Brooks battled and kept the lead. Brooks capitalized on a two on rush with another goal from Parker Sondag assisted by Charlie Alcorn. Berwick did not give up they scored a goal to bring the game within one with 26 seconds left in the third. The goal was scored by Tyler Gaulin with an assist from Chris Dowd who hit him with a beautiful stretch pass. They continued the assault trying to tie the game but Brooks scored an empty net goal scored by Jackson Matthews to seal the game.

1st Star: Parker Sondag (Brooks)

2nd Star: Padraic Cotton (Berwick)

3rd Star: CJ Beals (Brooks)

Millbrook vs. Tilton – Milbrook defeated Tilton 4-3.  The game came down to the very end and was decided by a Milbrook goal scored by Niko Rexine with 55 seconds remaining. The game had great pace with a lot of back and forth action. The first period belonged to Tilton where they established a two goal lead. The first goal was scored by Max Pineo from Brett Lockhart and Mark Blaney. Tilton’s second goal was scored by Max Cocchi from Mark Blaney. Tilton had most of the momentum in the first stanza. The second period belonged to Milbrook. They scored their first goal to bring the game within 1 with a power play goal scored by Bauer Morrissey. Milbrook built some momentum off of this goal and trapped Tilton in their zone. This led to the tying goal scored by Danny Smith who found the puck in net front chaos from a Fabrizio Mazzarelli shot. The third period was a back and forth battle between the two teams. Milbrook scored the go ahead goal with 4:54 left in the third. The goal was scored by Niko Rexine from Jake Percival. Tilton responded a minute later with a huge goal from Michael Tersoni from a Brett Lockhart shot that rang off the boards.  The teams battled until Milbrook netted the game winning goal with 55 seconds left in the third period. The goal was scored by Niko Rexine from Zach Bookman.

Three Stars:

1- Niko Rexine (Millbrook)

2 – Micheal Tersoni (Tilton)

3 – Mark Blaney (Tilton)

New Hampton vs. Hebron – Without question the star of this game was Isaac McLeod. The Dartmouth commit tallied four goals in the 6:15pm game at Pingree’s Johnson Rink. From start to finish New Hampton dominated this game however Hebron did put on a charge in the later stages of the second and third period.

The first two tallies came from MacLeod in the first but Hebron stemmed the tide in the second with a goal by junior Vinny Fugere. The momentum swung over to Hebron for a few minutes and they put on some pressure but MacLeod again went off. He scored his third with five minutes left in the second: the score was 3-1 after two. In the final frame, New Hampton put the game away after a nice individual effort by new Sacred Heart commit Marcus Joughin. Hebron’s Anthony LeBlanc matched the goal 30 seconds later but it was too little too late as MacLeod added his four as an insurance marker on a slot 1-timer and forward Rhys Jones finished off the scoring: 6-2 was the final.

Hebron took a period to get into the mix offensively but once they woke up they played fast and hard which put New Hampton on its heals defensively. If they continue this trend they will be tough to beat on Saturday. New Hampton has a number of skilled players upfront but they also have good team speed and an active D core who pushes the pace and doesn’t wait around for forecheckers to get deep in their zone. They will be a threat to make the 1st place or 2nd place games here. New Hampton 6, Hebron 2

Three Stars:
1st Star: F Isaac MacLeod (New Hampton)
2nd Star: F Marcus Joughin (New Hampton)
3rd Star: F Anthony LeBlanc (Hebron)
