Waltham, MA – This was a game both teams had circled on the calendar. A Christmas week meeting between the Rams of Marshfield High School and the Hawks of Waltham High School.
From the drop of the puck you could tell both teams were very hyped up. Most of the first period was a feeling out process with lots of physical play from both teams. There were no real scoring chances until one minute left in the period when Marshfield’s Tommy Carroll broke down the left wing and slid a pass across to Ryland McGlame who buried it top shelf giving Marshfield the 1-0 lead.
The second period had the makings of a good back and forth period with some good scoring opportunities on both sides, then it pivoted quickly. Special teams would take over with almost 10 minutes of penalties called on both teams. Waltham would capitalize first on the power play. Philip Sarkissian slid a puck down low in front to Nick George and he buried the equalizer. As the clock ticked down to three minutes Marshfield took to the power play. It didn’t take long to regain the lead when Cam McGettrick received a pass at the bottom of the circle from Nick Souretis and sniped over the goalie’s shoulder.
The third period looked a lot like the first. Not too many scoring chances, lots of hitting, and for Marshfield protecting the lead was at the top of their list. With about five minutes remaining and a delayed penalty call on Waltham, the unthinkable happened. With the Marshfield goalie skating to the bench, a Marshfield player tried to make a backward pass to a teammate and inadvertently shot the puck into his own empty net, giving Waltham a goal and making it a 2-2 game.
The game would go into overtime, both teams had a couple of chances but the final score would remain 2-2.
Three Stars:
1. F Cam McGettrick, Marshfield
2. F Ryland McGlame, Marshfield
3. F Nick George, Waltham
