Ed Burns Coffee Pot Quarterfinal: Reading Outlasts Framingham 4-1

Arlington, MA – We kept things rolling and continued on watching MyHockeyLive for Game 2 on the day of the Ed Burns Coffee Pot Tournament with a big matchup between the Reading Rockets and the Framingham Flyers down at Ed Burns Arena in Arlington.

Period 1 started off with Reading coming out flying to start, controlling all three zones early, and creating good chances in the opening four minutes of play. The first real big chance for Reading to take the lead was around the 11-minute mark in the first with forward Evan Pennucci coming down on a 2-on-1 and hitting the post glove side. Reading would be rewarded later in the period with six minutes to go with a quick shot in the slot by Pennucci who received a great pass from senior defenseman Mikey Dufton to give Reading a 1-0 lead. Framingham was able to find their legs after the goal and bounce back into the game with three minutes to go off a shot from the point that was deflected in the high slot off a skate from senior forward Caleb Patrick to tie this game before the period ended at 1-1.

Period 2 got underway with both sides going end-to-end trying to gain possession in the opening five minutes with a lot to play for as the game was open for anyone to take control of. Reading was able to build some momentum with nine minutes left in the period scoring off a blocked shot from the point as senior forward Jake Donovan collected the puck in the slot and ripped it home low blocker side to make it 2-1 Reading. The Rockets wouldn’t stop there with another goal a minute later from defenseman Zach Micciche jumping up in the play with a great pass from Matty Fichera entering the zone. Micciche would skate down the right-hand side and snipe one top shelf on the glove side to give his team a 3-1 lead. Framingham sophomore goalie Troy Huber would keep his team in it with maybe the save of the year around five minutes to go with a crazy scorpion kick save while laying down from a cross-crease shot in the slot. Reading’s Dufton would create a great opportunity in front of the net with two minutes to go and on the next shift Reading would tack on yet another with Pennucci collecting the puck at the top of the circle and splitting the defense to go top shelf glove side to lead his team into the intermission up 4-1.

In the final period, we would start off right where we left off with Reading continuing with all sorts of pressure and keeping the puck down in the Framingham zone for a majority of the first half of the frame. The game started to slow down as Reading was able to start controlling the puck down low in the Framingham zone to kill the remaining time left in this period. Framingham would get a couple of good shifts in towards the final five minutes but was unable to generate anything as Reading senior goaltender Alec Sullivan closed the game out to give his team a 4-1 win.
