Framingham, MA – The Rams of Marshfield High School made the long journey to Loring Arena to take on the Flyers of Framingham High School in the 2023 Pat Serio MHL Cup.
Marshfield may have had the longest bus ride to Loring, but it didn’t show. They were shot out of a cannon from puck drop, scoring two goals on their first two shots. Senior Tommy Carroll stole a puck from the Framingham defenseman trying to clear the blue line, cut across the slot and beat senior goalie Colin McKinney over his catching glove giving them the 1-0 lead. Under two minutes later the Rams would go up 2-0 as junior defenseman Jack Kenny fired a shot from the point, McKinney made a right pad save but senior Will Arnone was on the doorstep to bang home the rebound. Although Marshfield carried the play for most of the period, Framingham cut the lead to 1 with 4:53 to go in the first. Sophomore Ryan McAuliffe drove the net hard and put what seemed like a harmless backhand on net but somehow it squeezed through Marshfield junior goalie Liam Fullam.
Marshfield senior Ryland McGlame didn’t waste much time giving Marshfield the 3-1 lead. 20 seconds into the second period McGlame carried the puck over the blue line cut right in front of the defenseman at the circle and sniped a shot over McKinney’s shoulder, extending their lead by two. Over the next 5 minutes, Framingham started to get some chances and carry a bit of the play. They would capitalize on a 2-on-1 when senior Jeremy Auren buried a beautiful pass from McAuliffe, cutting the lead to 3-2 Marshfield. The period would end 3-3 when Framingham senior captain Noah Albright burst down the right wing, leaning in on the Marshfield defenseman and beating Fullam with a short-side snipe at a tough angle.
Both teams came out in the third working hard and looking to capitalize on a mistake by the opponent, and Marshfield did just that. With 12:22 to go, senior Cam McGettrick stole a puck from the Framingham defenseman just inside Marshfield’s defensive zone, then turned the jets on, breaking free and going in all alone on McKinney. McGettrick made a quick deke and slid it through McKinney’s 5-hole, giving Marshfield the lead at 4-3. Then 1:28 seconds later, junior Sammy Holte picked up a puck in the neutral zone, and with a burst of speed was in alone on McKinney once again, beating him five-hole to extend their lead to 5-3. The final blow was delivered a couple minutes later when senior defenseman Michael Bekerian dumped a puck on net from the neutral zone and it found its way past McKinney, extending the lead to 6-3. Framingham would make a goalie change, bringing in senior Robert Geltman in relief. The game got a little chippy with both teams taking some penalties, but Framingham couldn’t quite get back on track. and took their first loss of the season 6-3.
