South Boston, MA – In an early season battle of Top 10 Division 4 teams Winthrop skated past Hanover to capture the Michael Giordano Christmas Classic. Hanover came out and took the play to Winthrop early but Vikings goalie Michael Donahue kept the Vikings in the game until Hanover sophomore Cam Melone took a pass from fellow sophomore Henry Phillips and gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead. The Vikings would answer back with 3:15 left in the period on the power play when Winthrop junior Luke Githiniji buried a Colin O’Leary rebound and tied the game at 1. With under a minute to play, senior captain Petey Silverman took a pass from Githinji and put the Vikings ahead for good at 2-1. Shots in the first period: Vikings 14, Hawks 9
The Vikings took little time to add their lead in the second with 13:46 left in the period as junior Michael Holgersen took a Silverman pass on a 2-on-1 rush and found the twine to give the Vikings a 3-1 lead. Hanover goalie Thomas Perkins was great all day but played some of his best hockey in the second period. Winthrop would make it 4-1 before the end of the period when Aiden Survilas deposited a tipped O’Leary shot from Philip Boncore. Shot totals at the end of 2: Winthrop 25, Hanover 13
In the third period, Silverman created a breakaway and several other Grade A chances but Perkins turned them aside. Hanover would get a goal with two minutes left when senior defenseman John McDonald’s shot from the point found its way to the back of the net to make it 4-1, but that was all Hanover had left in the tank and the Vikings would win to improve to 5-0 on the season and win the “GIO” for the first time. Final shots: Vikings 36, Hawks 19
