Calvin Vachon | Shattuck St. Mary’s U18 | NAPHL 18U | L | G | 5’10” | 165 | Hamilton, MT | 2005 | 2022-2023: C |
U18: USA Hockey Nationals, May 3, 2022: In his first 120 minutes of play, Vachon only allowed one goal on 36 shots before facing a determined Rhode Island Saints team that ended up potting six on 34 shots against the 2005 birth year goalie. His team dominated the first two games, scoring 22 goals. While he faced 24 shots against a solid Long Island Gulls team, he was not overly tested or pressured in either of the first games. He was aggressive, came out to the shooter, stayed square and played with the size he has. His play was parallel to his team’s play and he was tested a lot more against the Rhode Island Saints where he was beaten on power play goals and well aimed shots. A young goalie with a lot of time to grow and compete. Grade: B-
2005s: USA Hockey Select 16s. August 12, 2021: Vachon comes to camp after an outstanding season playing up a level with the U16’s at Shattuck where he won 19 of 24 games and posted a 1.71 GAA and .930 SV% but went undrafted in the USHL. In fairness, he split time this season and his other counterpart despite being a year older had an even better stat line so he was someone we were really watching here and he was outstanding; arguably the most talented goalie in the camp. He’s smooth, flexible, has fluid hips, locks up shooters in tight and was a machine on the shootouts stopping all shooters to win a game in OT. He’s a great skater, uses his stick to poke pucks and block passes from behind the net and has a high level IQ to read the play and know where to be in the net. He has outstanding focus and is able to track the puck with opponents in his face, net front scuffles and never seems to get distracted and has the vision to see through screens. He has a quick glove and is very good at catching the puck and absorbing it to eliminate second chance opportunities. Vachon ended the camp with 2 shutouts; one of which was his last start where he stopped at least 4 Grade A opportunities and finished the camp with 77 stops on 83 shots for a .928 SV%. He was not selected for the All-Star game which was a major head scratcher as he was among our scouts rated the highest of any goalie in the camp. Grade: A-
U16: USA Hockey Nationals, May 12, 2021: Calvin is a July 2005 goalie playing U16. He keeps rebounds to the perimeter and is strong tracking the puck. He gets post to post well and has a strong lower half and push. He made a huge game-saving save (at the time) with under 10 seconds left in one viewing. He battles hard and is athletic. Grade: B
U16: SSMvs Minnesota Moose, September 25, 2020: Vachon had a decent game and was not to blame for most of the goals against tonight. Most impressive was his ability to make several big saves while his team was down 2-0 early, which allowed them to come back. He moved really well laterally showing great side to side speed. His weakness tonight was not keeping his balance as rebounds and some broken plays resulted in him falling to his stomach. Overall a decent performance for Vachon who stayed strong and gave his team the ability to come back from behind early. Grade: B-
U15: Minnesota Blades Invitational, September 24, 2020: Vachon was one of the smaller goalies this weekend, but also put up one of the biggest performances. He moves laterally quite well, and his skating ability allows him to be square and in position for almost every shot. For being one of the younger players in the U16 division, Vachon plays with great poise and confidence especially when the game is close. With his team holding on to a narrow lead he was able to make big save after big save, and didn’t stray away from his game in chaotic scenarios in front of the net. Very impressive to see the poise and confidence Vachon displayed this weekend and how well he handled pressure situations. Grade: A
2005s: WHL Bantam Cup, March 3, 2020: Calvin is a challenge goalie who gets out to the top of the paint to cut down angles and challenge shooters. When he mas=de passes he shows good mobility and can go side to side on his pads very well. Showed his athleticism making some sprawling saves when he looked down and out. Grade B
2005s: Crimson Elite Series, January 8, 2019: Vachon is extremely athletic and aggressive. He makes up for his size with the way he attacks the puck and controls his rebounds. Once the July 2005 grows, look for Vachon to be a top goalie on the west coast.
