Casey Severo – The Process

Casey Severo (4 Star Amateur Star Rating, NHL Grade — C) Forward

Casey Severo NHL Scouting Report: (1) Brain – Casey never looks busy. He doesn’t waste effort and this is a compliment. He is not a player who goes running all over the ice chasing the puck. He is a player who will thrive under a college and pro coaching staff that preaches structure. He reads his line mates very well and understands who has what responsibilities. He does not see a player out of position and compound the situation by trying to do their job too. I have no clue if he’s a New England Patriots fan, but I would not be surprised if he wears a Pats T-shirt under his shoulder pads that says “Do your job”. (2) Vision & Poise – He sees the ice very well and does not try to force bad decisions. He protects the puck well and can do so with his head up. (3) Feet – His straight line speed is above average. He creates space because he is very quick laterally and is powerful coming out of tight turns.(4) Compete & Effort – Casey wins battles. In the defensive zone Casey is very strong. He maintains net side positioning and ties up sticks. He wins face-offs by any means necessary. (5) Contact or Physicality – He finishes his checks, but does not take himself out of position to do so. He is willing to take a hit to make a play and will then beat the opposition up the ice. (6) Release – There is no dusting the puck off and he does not need space to fire a bullet. He shoots with his head up and with the purpose of scoring or creating rebounds. (7) One Timer Ability – We have not seen Casey one time many pucks, but when we have it has been hard and on net. (8) Body Language – We feel he carries himself like a leader and he treats the officials with respect. (9) Special Teams Potential – Casey’s attention to detail make him a potential high level penalty killer as do his willingness to battle and ability to win draws. His strong hands and physical strength will make coaches consider using him as a net front presence on a shooting power play. Coaches at higher levels will utilize him in many situations because of his high hockey IQ. (10) Intangibles – Casey is uncommitted at this point, but we do not see that being the case for much longer. While he may not have the flash or showmanship of some other big name prep prospects, he does play a pro styled game right now. He is smart, abrasive and does not cheat. He is a reliable low forward in the defensive zone and in the transition game Casey always gives consistent support for his defensemen. Casey is the type of player who will earn the coach’s trust and quickly turn into a guy who is tapped on the shoulder during key game situations.

New England Prep Players on NZ’s 2020 NHL Draft Watch List, March 2020: This kid is smart and clever. He baits guys into turnovers by changing angles and having quick feet. He’s a 2 way player who wins draws and has a bullet.

February NHL Draft Rankings: Casey was ranked #251 with a ‘C’ Neutral Zone NHL grade in our February 2020 NHL Draft rankings.

Casey Severo De-Commits From Merrimack, October 2019: Merrimack head coach Scott Borek had an interesting Tuesday. First, it was revealed that 3.75-star forward Casey Severo de-committed from the Warriors. First committing to the program last fall, Severo will play for Noble & Greenough this season as well as the Boston Jr. Eagles 18U team in split season. Severo had 29 points (14 goals, 15 assists) in prep hockey last year and nearly made Tri-City’s USHL roster out of camp. “Casey is a skilled, savvy playmaker who plays a smart, heads up game with a nice combination of hustle and burst to his game,” our scouts said. “He can change direction, make quick deke moves to cut inside on defenders and has a quick release on his snap shot.”

Flood Marr Tournament, January 2019: Casey is a skilled, savvy playmaker who plays a smart, heads up game with a nice combination of hustle and burst to his game. He can change direction, make quick deke moves to cut inside on defenders and has a quick release on his snap shot. He was more of a distributor this week than a scorer but showed his best on the power play where he had the poise and vision to wait until the defense was spread out and then attack the seams with his passing ability. College: Merrimack  Grade: B

MA Tier 1 Midget Playoffs, November 2018: Plays a high-tempo complete 200’ game. Was good here in all situations and used his speed and body to create problems for defenders. Casey is responsible and always on the right side of the puck. He has a good set of hands and sees the ice well which allows him to make the right reads. He is good down low and along the walls and has a quick first step to drive the puck to the net. He finds soft ice in the offensive zone and has good timing. Able to slow the game down when the puck is on his stick. Will be expected to fill some holes at Nobles this Winter. Grade: B+ College: Merrimack

HPHL BEAST U18, October 2018: Severo is a solid compact built puck distributor who does a good job creating for line mates and throwing body around. One strong back check particular saved a goal where he relentlessly chased open opponent on 2 on 1, shutting down an almost sure goal. Presented a consistent net presence with a high tempo motor. Should look to get more pucks to the net this winter for the Bulldogs. Grade: B-

USA Hockey Select 17 National Development Camp Rankings, July 2018: Severo made his first National Camp after leading Nobles & Greenough in points this past season. A player who has put himself on the map this season at the prep level continued his strong play here. He’s got good burst which allows him to pull away from defenders and quick hands to operate in traffic. He’s a crafty playmaker who led several rushes up the ice, made tricky passes to the slot area and scored a nice rebound goal. Severo is a smart and skilled combo undersized forward who finished the week with a 1-2-3 line in 5 games. An emerging D1 prospect. Grade: B

Battle of Boston, May 2018: Was more than a PPG player for an average Nobles team this year. Casey is a good athlete and a threat to create offense each time out on the ice. He moves well with a balanced, controlled stride. He is quick and find space in the offensive zone. Thinks the game quickly and uses his teammates well. He still needs to add that extra gear that will separate him, but he is a high-upside prospect. Grade: B+

Prep Report Two, February 2018: Severo was Noble’s best player. This best part of his game is that there is no real best part of his game. He does everything well. Casey has decent size with good reach to protect and extend possession. He thinks the game at a high level and moves smartly without the puck. Played the point on the power play and can shoot and pass equally well. We liked how he used his teammates and his body to create on the cycle. He always is looking to go to the net, slips through seams well and gets the puck on the cage He is a hockey player and he makes lots of plays in all three zones. All situations type that can play anywhere up and down the roster at the next level. His game is mature, balanced and will translate as he moves up. Grade: A

Junior Bruins Shootout U16, October 2017: Great motor and plays hard. Smooth skater that makes plays in the offensive zone. He had big two goal game in the semis vs Selects that helped carry his team to the finals. Uses his speed through the neutral zone to create scoring chances.

Blue Line Elite Prep Cup U16, June 2017: Severo played a consistent, 200 ft. game here. His passes put others in good spots and his puck management is excellent. He looked polished amongst this group and we liked how he drove the cage on the rush and off the cycle. He created turnovers and took smart angles to pucks. His touches were good and he leads by example. His game is very well rounded as he can score, defend, distribute and add energy. Grade: B+

U15 USA Tier 1 Nationals, April 2017: Severo is the team captain and was very good in Arizona. He made everyone else around him better. He worked for pucks and made plays in all three zones. He does everything well. He can skate, shoot, pass and play defense. He is a true 200 foot player and he led his team with his effort and in points. He is smart and as a result has a lot of upside. Grade: A-

OHL Draft Top 150 American Rankings, April 2017: Casey was rated #133 with a Neutral Zone Star rating of 3.

T1EHL U15 Showcase, December 2016: Severo had a good tournament. He is one of those players who contributes even when he is not on the scoreboard. He does the little things well. In the last game he was cheated out of a key assist in the when he won a draw clean in the zone, He also got the game winner in SO. Grade: A
