Colin Winn | Boston Jr. Bruins | NCDC | L | G | 6’1″ | 174 | Uncomm. | Westford, MA | 2004 | 2021-2022: C |
NCDC: Beantown Fall Classic, November 6, 2021: Winn was one of the top goaltenders we saw on the weekend. The Jr. Bruins netminder has bounced around in his junior career, playing for Selects Academy and BK Selects and he put up strong numbers at both stops. He is now playing in the NCDC as a 2004 against players three years his senior and he doesn’t look at all out of place. His footwork in the crease was smooth and he did not overcommit on any shots. He has excellent shot awareness both coming from behind his net and from all angles in front of him. He stood tall and took away as much of the crease as he could when the shooter approached getting close to the cage. In odd-man rush situations he didn’t panic or go down too early, he maintained focus on the passing lanes and took away the shooting angles resulting in a missed opportunity. Some younger goalies will commit early and leave the far side of the net open, but Winn read the play all the way and recognized when to make the right adjustment. He was active around his net and looked to make plays with his stick which had a 50/50 success rate and he will need to improve that at the next level. We have no doubt that he has a bright future and coaches would be smart to give him a long look. Grade: A-
NCDC: Junior Bruins vs Islanders HC, October 17, 2021: In the 6-4 Junior Bruins win Winn gave up 4 goals on 16 shots. This was a hell game for any goaltender and for Winn this was no exception. The shots were few and far between, but when they did occur they were high percentage scoring opportunities. The first goal against came during a quick 2on1 with the shooter walking straight down the pipe on the Islanders second shot of the game 5:45 into the first period. The next goal was on the third shot of the game on a partial breakaway 7:30 into the first period. From this point on all we were looking for was mental toughness and composure, and we feel Winn scored high marks here.
Morandom Thoughts, October 5, 2021: Winn is very quick laterally yet under control, eats pucks, limited rebounds, comes out to play the puck with confidence, made an absolute ridiculous save while killing a 5v3 on Saturday night showing awareness anticipation and athleticism while going post to post to save a one timer, very poised and confident, teammates are noticeably confident in him.
USA Hockey Selects 17’s, July 14, 2021: Winn was named to the NZ All-Star Team but shunned by USA Hockey. The goaltenders were all solid here but often suffered an unfair fate due to defensive plays, bad bounces or defense that seemed intent all week on jumping up ice. In fairness Winn didn’t see a ton of rubber but he managed the game well, he had a .917 SV% which is tough in this tournament and used his size and athleticism to make difficult saves look easy. He held his posts, has strong push offs and uses his stick well to break up passes and also come out of the net and play the puck. He was poised under heavy pressure and was particularly noticeable on the penalty kill when he was calmly finding the puck through traffic, moving well, tracking pucks and absorbing shots to avoid big rebound chances. Grade: B
U15/U16 JGG Showcase, February 20, 2021: Athletic, fundamentally sound and focused. Winn buckled up and dialed in against the #2 ranked North Jersey team in this skilled matchup as he brings a competitive, energetic style to the crease. Winn gets out on top of his crease to challenge shooters and has great lateral mobility. Clean and confident skater who likes to come out of his net to stop pucks and make outlet passes for his defensemen. Winn made a few no look backhand passes to shake oncoming forecheckers and make exits easier for his team. Anticipates well and has great flexibility as Winn was able to slide into the splits and then recover back to his post with ease. Always looking and prepared for the next play. Winn showed off a quick and flashy glove. You could see his confidence building and building during the game with each ongoing save. Competitive, smooth skating netminder with room to fill out and a ton of potential. Grade: A-
U16: BK Selects Academy, September 29, 2020: Winn took up a lot of the net as he was technically sound and aggressive. He looked like he could skate as he was really mobile between the pipes. He made a nice breakaway save on a high-end player and remained alert through quiet stretches. He was athletic and technical which is a good place to start in the net. Grade: B+
U16: Yale Showcase, September 26, 2020: Colin looked bigger than his listed 6′ tall. He played a mobile and alert game. he didn’t get overwhelmed with shots in his game today but he stayed sharp and made some late stops when the Eagles pushed. He stopped a breakaway and was technical and read plays well.
Beantown Classic (2004s), August 31, 2020: Winn was the most highly regarded netminder in the division coming in after a highly successful season with Selects U15 this past season and backed it up here. He’s a quick, flexible butterfly goalie who made some dazzling saves against odd man rushes where he had to push off the post slide across and make hard stops. He was excellent down low using the pad and catches any pucks he can to limit rebound chances. He stays square, he has solid footwork and technique and savvy hockey sense to know where the puck is going. He was also the most active among goalies getting out of his net and playing the puck and showed some hands and ability to move it up to his teammates to help the breakout. Winn went undrafted in both the USHL and QMJHL Draft but this underrated prospect has a high ceiling as he continues to develop.
Wendy Dufton Minor Midget AAA, November 3, 2019: By far the most active goalie in this tournament, Winn is quick to leave his crease and acts as a 3rd D, controlling the puck and moving it when necessary. He is confident leaving his net and smart moving the puck up quickly to catch the other team making a line change. Winn is tall and comes out to challenge the shooter and tracks the puck well, battling hard on every rebound by pushing off quickly in the necessary direction. Grade: A-
Mass Festival 2004s, May 16, 2019: Winn has decent size for the position but we liked his ability to stay square to the shot. He also shows the ability to get set quickly as the play resets and his pop times from his feet to his knees (and vice versa) are quick and twitchy. Stays consistently in position which means he is able to make odd man saves look somewhat routine and he stays big in the net to take away as much space as humanly possible. Grade: B
