Eriks Mateiko

Eriks Mateiko (LW, L, 6’5″, 210, Saint John Sea Dogs, 11/18/2005)

2024 NHL Draft Grade: B-

Eriks Mateiko is a 6’5″, 210 pound left shot left wing who has been steadily climbing draft boards throughout the season, showcasing a solid two-way game complemented by excellent edge work and skating ability. As a rangy power forward, Mateiko’s growth has been evident, having grown an inch and a quarter since the start of the season. His performance in the Top Prospects game exceeded expectations, demonstrating his ability to handle the speed and pace of elite competition.

Having observed Mateiko’s development over the past two seasons in the QMJHL, it’s clear that he possesses strong hockey sense, particularly evident in his exceptional playmaking ability on zone entries or while rolling off contact from below the goal line. With the Sea Dogs’ mid season trades Mateiko was expected to take on the increased responsibilities of leaderships, which at this point we feel was ideal for his overall development. There is little doubt in his potential as a big-bodied presence and effective two-way forward at the professional level is evident.

While Mateiko still needs to improve his agility and improve his hand speed in tight areas and traffic, his progress in these areas since last season is notable. Given time and space he boasts impressive puck skills and a quick, accurate release, though there’s room for improvement in his fitness to improve his off puck play throughout his shifts and throughout an entire game. When firing on all cylinders, Mateiko displays confidence and competence, but he must bring that level of compete and confidence more consistently to reach his full potential.

Notably, Mateiko’s vision and passing ability have significantly improved, contributing to his overall growth as a player. With continued development and consistency in his game, Mateiko projects to be a mid-round draft selection in the upcoming NHL Draft who can make an impact on an NHL roster a few years down the road.
