U19: World Jr. A Challenge, U19 Sweden vs Canada East, December 16, 2022: Unger Sorum totaled 14:15 in ice time including 1:42 on the power play and 0:18 while shorthanded. Tonight he played the left flank on Team Sweden’s top power play unit from where he easily pulled bouncing pucks off the wall while showing the poise to feel the killer’s pressure and then make hard flat accurate passes to his teammates. He also had two rocket royal road one time passes that caught Canada’s killers with their toecaps going the wrong way. As we’ve seen before he has a smooth release from the right dot lane and can fire his snapshot while his feet are in motion. Unger Sorum had a beautiful primary assist after a zone entry where he showed snapshot from the right dot lane. His deceptiveness made Canada’s goalie over commit and he found the wide dot lane for a royal road pass that led to the goal. He finished the game +1, with 1 shot on goal, 2 grade “A” opportunities that missed the net, 1/1 on face-offs, 0 hits, received 1 hard body check and had 0 shots blocked.
U19: World Jr. A Challenge, U19 Sweden vs Latvia, December 12, 2022: Unger Sorum totaled 13:01 in ice time including 1:40 while on the power play and 0:05 while shorthanded. The first thing we noticed was that he looked to have more bounce in his stride and improved top speed than in previous viewings. On Team Sweden’s second power play unit he was positioned as the bumper where he rolled to set subtle picks, showed the awareness to feel pressure and either draw defenders away from the dangerous ice or one-touch passes into space as well as the hand eye coordination to get his stick blade on two one-timers from the top of the umbrella for tips. Unger Sorum showed a quick catch and release snapshot on bouncing pucks without needing to stickhandle prior to firing it. He finished the game even, with 2 shots, 1 grade “A”, 0 hits, received 1 hard body check and had 1 shot blocked.
U18 Five Nations Tournament, November 12, 2022: Unger Sorum totaled 14:11 in ice time including 1:28 while on the power play. He did not play while shorthanded. The stat line shows he was -2 on the game, but in all reality he was hung out to dry on a bad line change for one of the minuses. The other came with seven minutes left in the third period where he was the high man on a zone entry and got caught going the wrong way on a grey area turnover. In 5on5 play he showed good defensive awareness away from the puck by picking off a few neutral zone passes that led to clean zone entries and shots on net. Unger Sorum showed the consistent puck protection skills to extend offensive zone possession and we liked how he moved his feet towards open ice or the slot after he made the pass. He drew a hooking penalty on just such a play in the third period. His power play time came late in the third period when the game was out of reach, but we would have still liked to have seen more urgency in his play. He finished the night with 3 shots, 1 grade “A”, 0 hits, received 1 hard hit, had 2 shots blocked, 9 giveaways, 4 takeaways and he won 44% of his 16 puck battles.
U18 Five Nations Tournament: Sweden vs Switzerland, November 9, 2022: Unger Sorum totaled 10:33 in ice time including 2:14 while shorthanded. He did not play on the power play. While playing 5on5 it was a pretty nondescript game for Unger Sorum, but it’s worth noting that he did earn a primary assist off a defensive zone face-off while Switzerland had their goalie pulled late in the third. Shorthanded was a different story as he played top four penalty kill minutes for Team Sweden. While shorthanded his stick was in lanes and it was very obvious that he had payed attention in the pre-game scouting reports as he got his stick on multiple royal road passing attempts which led to time off the clock and 200′ clears. He was also very vocal when calling out “switches” or “hand offs” with his PK unit. He finished with 1 primary assist, +1, 0 shots, 0/1 on a PK face-off, 1 giveaway, 1 takeaway and he won 33% of his 3 puck battles.
J20 SuperElit: Leksands vs Djurgardens, October 8, 2022: Unger Sorum totaled 18:17 in ice time including 4:10 while on the power play. He did not play shorthanded minutes. Offensively he is not a burner but he has a great anticipation, strong deep knee bend and a fluid stride that he keeps in motion at all times. He finished the game with two assist and the first was a thing of beauty. On the play he adjust his route while he was receiving a pass in the neutral zone and then gave a soft touch backhand sauce pass between the two opposing defensemen to send his linemate in on a breakaway. The second assist came on the power play where Unger Sorum was positioned as the extended left goal line, from where he gave a perfect pass for a one-timer in the dot lane which led to a rebound goal. He finished the game with 2 PP shots on goal, 1 hit and he had 2 shots blocked.
